While the current recession has made employers cut back on workers, many jobless adults seek higher education to enhance their resumes and increase their chances at either maintaining, or even attaining a job. Not only has it affected people currently in the workforce, but this recession has forced some college students to take up jobs to help pay for expenses and/or to ease the financial burdens off their parents. With the sudden influx of students and greater constraints of time for them, online classes are becoming a more viable substitute to traditional in-class sessions. According to the Department of Education, there has been an increase of about 19% in enrollment rates for the California State Universities starting from, 2000 to 2008 (The California State University). Also, unemployment rates in California have increased from a low of about 5% back in 2000 to a high of 11.5% currently (Bureau of Labor Statistics). There should be no surprise that unemployment rates and college enrollment rates correlate. With the increasing number of people being laid off, more and more decide to go back to school. However, many adults do not have the time to be full-time students. This is the primary reason why several people choose to take online classes instead of a more traditional sit-in class. The ease of choosing when and where you study is invaluable if you work full-time. By taking an online course, it eliminates the need to sit-in class to learn. This not only helps save time in everyday schedules, it allows a person to study at their own pace and review material whenever. Unlike traditional in-class sessions, where students have to work around their school schedules unless, he or she must wants to miss material covered for that day.
