1. Introduction The main issues involved in these two essays were about the comparable worth and just wage with the meaning that “jobs deemed to be of equal value to the employer should pay the same, regardless of their sex or race-typing.”(Amott&Matthaei, 1984) Both of two essays discussed the history of emergence of the comparable worth strategy, dig out the basis which supports this comparable strategy, exposed future influences on society of comparable worth and offered their understanding and expectation on comparable worth. Two authors held different attitudes toward this comparable worth strategy. Teresa Amott, together with Julie Matthaei believed in the comparable worth strategy as long as the comparable worth strategy revised its job-analysis system and broadened its agenda. Charles Krauthammer attacked just wage strategy as an “avalanche”(Krauthammer, 1984)because of the “absurd” and “capricious” study it based on , the “chaos” it may cause to the society. 2. About the emergence of comparable worth On the topic of emergence of comparable worth, Amott and Matthaei offered a detailed and clear description about the history, the background and the strategies utilized by pay equality advocates. However, Krauthammer in the essay The just wage: From bad to worth shared little room for the depiction of the history of comparable worth or just wage strategy. He only covered a little about the status quo of comparable worth as “an island in the sea of well-intended ambiguity and evasion”.(Krauthammer, 1984). Amott and Matthaei illustrated the history of comparable worth strategy, tracing its root to World War2. The comparable worth strategy came into being to prevent the unequal pay caused by the gender-biased job segregation, even though the Equal Pay Act of 1963 prohibited unequal pay for equal work.
