Oliver Hazard Perry “We have met victory and they are ours.” Oliver Hazard Perry penned this quote after the defeat of the British troops. Oliver Hazard Perry was commander of the American forces on Lake Erie. He will be featured at this summer’s 2012 Ohio Chautauqua from June 26-30, 2012 in the city of Urbana and Champaign County. This event will focus on The Time When Ohio was the Western Frontier and will feature five historical figures. These figures are the folk hero Johnny Appleseed, the aristocrat frontier Margaret Blennerhasset, Lewis and Clark explorer York, Iroquois Chief John Logan, and Oliver Hazard Perry. Perry will be featured on June 27, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at Urbana University. Oliver Hazard Perry was born on August 23, 1785 in South Kingston, Rhode Island to United States Naval officer and wife. At a young age, Perry would sail with his father all over the world. He soon became a commissioned lieutenant in the United States Army. On September 10, 1813, the twenty-seven year old Perry soon found himself in the Battle of Lake Erie. Early in the battle, Perry’s flagship, The Lawrence, took heavy blows against the enemy, the British. 80 percent of the crew were either killed or harmed during the beginning part of the battle. In the attempt to win the battle, Perry carried the ship’s flag with Captain Lawrence’s dying words, “Don’t give up the ship” written in it to another ship named Niagara. The new ship helped the Americans defeat the British. The British lowered their flag by surrendering to Perry. There are many moments surrounding the Lake Erie area dedicated to Perry. In Putt-in-Bay the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial commemorating Perry’s bravery. At 352 feet, this Doric column stands the tallest monument in the United States.
