Abstract
This document will briefly describe the selection process for a local, state, or federal agency police officer. This document will also include the major components of the training process and career development programs for police officers.

Officer Selection Process
      In order for an individual to become a police officer, he or she must met the minimum eligibility requirements. Some minimum eligibility requirements to become an officer are the same, depending on the agency, which the individual will be applying. Minimum requirements include that an individual be a U.S. citizen, have a valid driver’s license, one year experience involving public contact, a high school diploma or GED, no serious misdemeanors or any felonies after 18, and be at least 21 at the time of graduation from the Police Academy. These requirements and rules are set by the government for police organizations to follow (Grant & Terry, 2008).   The first requirement after all minimum requirements are met is to complete an application or written examination. Other requirements and eligibility standards are similar among some agencies but not every agency is the same at the local, state, or federal level. Most federal law enforcement agencies require that an applicant have an undergraduate degree. The most common requirements for local, state, and federal level include:
        • Submission of a complete application
        • Passing a written test
        • Passing a physical test (agility/ability)
        • Passing a visual acuity test
        • Passing a criminal background investigation
        • Passing a psychological and health evaluation
        • Passing an oral examination to include polygraph
