The Odyssey Essay Most of society today views heroes as cape-wearing super stars who fight crimes. However in reality a hero could be anyone. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus was considered a hero in mythological times. He didn’t wear a cape or fight “evil doers”. He was just a mortal who had fought in a war, and when the war was over all he wanted to do was go home. However, on his journey home, he had to overcome many obstacles. Odysseus was a war hero. Also a hero in modern day would be Jennifer Daniels because she had courage and strength to get through all she had to. She was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 32 and battled it for 4 years. A hero is a person who is admired for courage or noble qualities. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is viewed as a hero because he faces many dangerous adventures. He is also very good with dangers, loneliness, and temptation. For example, Odysseus faced danger and temptation when he and his men were passing by the sirens. However, Odysseus made sure to cover all of his men’s ears, so they would not be attracted by the sirens song. Odysseus defeated and outsmarted the Cyclops by stabbing him in his eye. When the Cyclopes woke up from the pain, Odysseus had told him it was “nobody” who had stabbed him in the eye. He did this so the other Cyclopes’ would not know who had done it. “Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, too your eye: Laetes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” (p. 816 l. 425) This shows that Odysseus had courage and was in fact, a hero. In modern days, a hero would be someone like Jennifer Daniels. She was the type of hero that was neither a fool nor ibvincible. Jennifer was diagnosed with skin cancer at the age of 32. It had started in mole, on her left leg. Soon it had spread to her thigh of her left leg. However with some
