Odilon Redon Why he was famous Odilon Redon was famous for a number of reasons, all falling under the category of art. He was most famous for his oil and pastel paintings, but also lithography, etching and sculpting. His popularity greatly grew when a catalogue of lithographs and etching was published in 1913 by André Mellerio. When he was given the single largest representation at the New York Armory Show his fame grew further. Various articles/books were published about Redon. For example Peintre Dessinateur et Graveur, which is a collection of Mellerio’s papers. His birth name was Bertrand-Jean Redon, and got his nickname, Odilon, from his mother. He started drawing at a young age and was awarded a drawing prize at school when he was ten. When Redon was fifteen he began formally studying drawing. His father disapproved and insisted he change to architecture. He failed to pass the entrance exam at Paris’ Ecole des Beaux-Arts, thus ending any plans for a career as an architect. Once back in Bordeaux, he took up sculpture, lithography and etching. In 1870 he joined the Franco–Prussian War. When the war was over he moved to Paris where he worked mostly with charcoal and lithography. His work only gained popularity in 1878. In the 1890’s he begun using oils and pastels which dominated his art for the rest of his life. Sadly Redon passed away on the 6th July 1916.
