ASSIGNMENT 3 Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel was fined $70,000 for a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act after a worker was injured. List of Events : The hotel asked a worker to change the fuse in a 600-volt electric panel. The worker used metal plies to pull out the fuse and there was an explosion. Injury Sustained and the Direct Cause : The worker suffered first, second and third degree burns as a result of an explosion that happened because the worker used metal plies made out of a metal that was a good conductor of electricity, to pull out an electrical fuse from a 600-volt electrical panel. Sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations violated : Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel was convicted under the violation of Ontario Regulation 851,Section 43 that states “Tools and other equipment that are capable of conducting electricity and endangering the safety of any worker shall not be used in such proximity to any live electrical installation or equipment that they might make electrical contact with the live conductor.” Other Section of the Act and Regulations that the hotel could have been charged with are as follows : Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act Section 25 (1) : An employer shall ensure that : (a) The equipment, materials and protective devices as prescribed are provided (b) The equipment, materials and protective devices provided by the employer are maintained in good condition (c)The measures and procedures prescribed are carried out in the workplace The equipment, material and the protective devices provided by the employer are used as prescribed.
