Obesity in America T. Joy Psychology 101 June 3, 2012 Currently in America, you can hardly turn on daytime television without one of the popular talk shows discussing how to prepare a quick and delicious meal for your family; the most popular trend in exercise equipment; new diet fads or diet supplements. Sections 9.5 and 9.6 of the “Psychology” text book discuss many of the aspects of obesity and why humans eat. Some of the aspects discussed in the text are physiological reasons including hormones and metabolism, lack of exercise, social components, family obesity, maladaptive eating and cartoon characters influences. The text states that over the past 20 years, obesity is on the rise in many industrialized countries and the United States is leading the way with 1/3 of the population battling obesity. The first article I chose is titled, “Fat Chance – New Clues Why We Gain Weight” by Eric Ravussin for the Nutrition Action Health Letter in the December 2010 edition. This article lists possible reasons as to why Americans are becoming heavier. The first reason that Mr. Ravussin states is “Americans eat too much and move far too little”. Currently in America, two out of every three adults and one out of every three children are overweight or obese. In 1994, the hormone Leptin was discovered as a controlling factor in the regulation of stored fats. Leptin is the body’s way of preparing for possible starvation. The article discusses the fact that the body has its own survival genes, hence more fat the body possesses, the more likely for survival. The article also discusses environmental factors, such as, cheap and palatable food without expending any energy to get it; very good nutrition during the fetal period and early life; our environment being a constant 70 degree temperature; and viruses being some of the causes for the obesity problem.
