Obesity today is a widely spread nutritional disorder that can affect anybody at any age. Excess weight is major medical problem for more than one third of Americans and after cigarette smoking; it is the second largest cause of death. Obesity goes back a long way. For many years, billions of people have been obese and overweight. It was actually considered something good at that time because being obese meant that the person was wealthy and had lots of money, and it also meant being able to buy food wasn’t a problem, but they did not fully understand all the health risks at that time. However in today’s society all that has changed, while a few extra pounds may not suggest obesity, it may indicate a tendency to gain weight easily and a need for changes in diet and/or more exercise especially in our children. Generally, a person is not considered obese until his weight is at least 10 percent higher than what is recommended for his height and body type. Obesity most commonly begins in children between the ages of 5 and 6, and during adolescence. A study done by the American Academy of Child n Adolescence Psychiatry (AACAP) has shown that approximately nine million American children over 6 years old are considered obese, and a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. In America the statistics show that between 26 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. In addition, unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year. Despite all of this obesity treatments remain controversial, and only surgical therapies have proven effective.
