19 October 2011 “Gangsta Rap and American Culture” Evaluation Michael Dyson essay, “Gangsta Rap and American Culture” wasn’t meant to evaluate rap music. Instead, it was meant to bring attention to the conditions that exhisted in the “ghetto’s” and the stereotypes surrounding the lifestyle. Dyson explains how the media and the general public want to blame gangsta rap for its troubles in society. Dyson further explains background information on the ideas and history of the rap community. Dyson states “the severe 70’s busted the economic boom of the 60’s” as being the force that helped rap to become what it is now (Dyson 433).
The OJ Simpson Trial Rhonda Edmundson Buena Vista On June 12, 1994 OJ Simpson, the famous football player, actor and hero to some, on that very day his life took a drastic turn for the worse. The hero that we all knew was being accused of a very serious crime, a double homicide. According to Crime Library, “It became the most publicized case in US history. It was the longest trial ever held in California, costing over $20 million to fight and defend.” Nine months long, no eyewitnesses, no murder weapon, the prosecution was confident that they would convict based on DNA evidence. Most believed that OJ did commit these horrendous crimes but in the end OJ Simpson was acquitted of the double homicide.
Contemporary Issues: The Death Penalty Contemporary Issues: The Death Penalty The death penalty is said to be the greatest deterrent to crime in the United States. However, in recent years those states, which still use the death penalty, have seen a marked increase in crimes where death is a punishment. Is the threat of being put to death still an effective deterrent? According to FBI statistics (2008), the national murder rate per capita was 5.4 in 2008. With a national population of over 304 million people, that is around 16,000 murders for 2008 alone.
There is the emotion of heroism. My father loved Joe Louis and Jesse Owens, and he wasn't alone. They were icons of an era. After Louis defeated Primo Carnera in 1935, a writer for The Los Angeles Times gushed: ''The colored race couldn't have chosen two more remarkable men than Jesse Owens and Joe Louis to be its outstanding representatives. Owens is being hailed as the greatest track and field athlete of all time, same thing goes for 'Dead Pan' Joe Louis, whose decisive defeat of Carnera has sent the scribes scurrying to the dictionaries seeking superlatives of greater scope than any they've used before.''
His family tried their best to mold him into a better man in order to survive the later years to come. Wright had to realize the harsh realities of the consequences of being a black man in the early 1900s. In that time, many blacks were tortured for the simple fact that they were not white. Black people experienced much violence. Jim Crow Laws promoted the idea that blacks were naturally mediocre to blacks in all important ways, including intelligence, morality, and civilized behavior.
That’s why I agree with the prosecuting argument of the American dream that Minorities, and women, were discriminated against. First off, minority men and women, like Book T. Washington, were oppressed daily by the majority. Slavery was once a very popular mindset of this country, however today we look upon it as cruelty. Book T. Washington was born into slavery and felt the white man oppressing him most of his life. He fought back and gave speeches against such oppression against him and his people.
The biggest reason that I am the most influential, however, is my endless array of media outlets. I own newspapers and television stations around the world, but one of my largest assets is the Fox News Corporation. Fox has had a stranglehold on sports broadcasting since the mid 1980’s, and there is no foreseeable reason for that to change. My exploits to take over broadcasting of the NFL, the most popular sport in America today, was the single biggest sports movement of the 80’s. As I was quoted in 1993, shortly after aquiring the rights to televise all NFC games on Fox, leaving CBS, NBC, and ABC to scramble for the leftovers, “We're a network now.
I remember the first quarter so well. I played horrible that quarter which I couldn’t understand coming off an outstanding performance from the season opener where I recorded a school record for the amount of tackles by a single player in one game. I couldn’t understand why I was having such a bad first quarter. Was it because of the mixed emotions and excitement for this big game? Was it because I was thinking too much because it was on live TV?
In the mid-2000s, when crime rates were declining fast, almost 70% of Americans wrongly said that crime rates had risen over the past year. Analysis: Why gun controls are off the agenda in America What force on earth could convince Americans that down is up? The most powerful force of all: television. TV news -- and especially local TV news -- is dominated by news of violent crime, the more spectacular and murderous the better. TV news creates a false picture of a country under attack by rampaging criminals, and especially nonwhite criminals.
Mr Simpson enjoyed his life after football and began to more involve himself in television acting, hosting, and sports commentary. Mr Simpson is also known as one of the most famous criminal defendants in American history .I have taken into account the events that took place on the night of June 12,1994 and how Mr Simpson is connected to the murder of Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman. The O.J. Simpson trial has by far been one of the longest, and most expensive trials in california history. Part of why this Trial was on a different par was not only because of his celebrity status, but also due to the amounts of evidence involved in the case.
