This is summary of two articles describing neglect of residents at a residential home in Northampton. One is from Daily Mail (6.10.2010)” ‘Severe neglect’ of staff blamed for appalling deaths of five elderly care home residents in just two weeks” and the other one is from The Guardian(6.10.2010) “Elderly care home residents died after suffering ‘severe neglect’ “ .
Both articles describe preventable deaths of residents in a private nursing home, Parkside House between July 22 and August 6, 2009. The home was originally set up to provide for people over 65 suffering from dementia or long-standing mental illness. But the management decided to admit residents with higher level of dependency and additional needs and ‘simply could not cope’.
The scandal started when a female resident was admitted to hospital with severe pressure ulcers, unresponsive, dehydrated. She died following day. Another resident was found in similar condition and died the same day. Shortly after three other residents died in different care settings. All deaths, with verdict of natural causes, were consistent with severe neglect.
The home has been inspected by CQC in 11/2008 and rated adequate. Shortly after that standards deteriorated quickly, however no indications of any concerns have been reported. Immediate inspection after the first death found various failings such as pressure mattresses not being used correctly, residents not receiving appropriate care, no system in place for residents in risk or already having pressure sores.
This findings highlighted concerns about the standards of care and the home was closed on July 31 and remaining residents moved to different care settings.
Phyllis Marcelle Johnson, the care home manager, has been suspended for 18 months by NMC. Six other members of staff and the owner have been referred to NMC.
