PROMOTE COMMUNICATION IN HEALTH, SOCIAL CARE OR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLES SETTING (SHC 31) Outcome 1 Understand why effective communication is important in the work setting. 1. Identify the different reasons people communicate. People communicate to express needs; to share ideas and information; to reassure; to express feelings; to build relationships; socialise; to ask questions and to share experiences. People also communicate in order to establish and maintain relationships with others, to give and receive information and instructions, to understand and be understood, to share opinions, knowledge, feelings, emotions, to give encouragement and show others they are valued.
Sometimes a young person can have difficulty in this area, when expressing emotional needs due to personal experiences, which may have affected them in a negative way (i.e. abuse, neglect, isolation). ‘Controlling people in the environment’ is used to communicate instructions to be followed out by others. This can include directing groups of people, to achieve a common goal or ordering an individual ‘to’ or ‘not to’ carry out an act, perhaps for their own safety or the safety of others. ‘Social interaction’ allow us to interact as social beings with one and other.
It is important to see a person’s reaction when communicating, as it can give you evidence of their understanding. Seeing a person’s body language or facial expressions can give you an idea of their feelings and emotions about any situation or event that is occurring. Having knowledge of these skills is good because it can show you if someone is maybe feeling anxious or concerned about something, which you can then try and change. Explain why it is important to find out an individual’s communication and language needs, wishes and preferences. It is important to know a person’s individual needs when relating to communication, because it allows yourself to create or use various methods in order to support individuals with communication difficulties.
Outcome 2 2.1 Picture boards, brail, sign language, finger writing, hearing aids. 2.2 my own role and practice can impact on an individual who has specific communication needs as if you do not communicate with a person in a way that they understand they may feel left out and alone, hence they may suffer from additional mental health disabilities such as depression. When you do spend time with a service user, and do include them and communicate in a way that they understand then they will feel as if they are valued Features of the environment that may help or hinder communication include: Visual Factors Lighting conditions: light should be on the talker's face Interfering objects: visual noise Distance: no further than 6 feet from the talker Talker's Face: face/mouth should not be covered head movements should be well-lit no eating, chewing, smoking moustaches
Before you start to communicate, always remember to get the individuals attention first, this is usually done by gently touching the individuals shoulder as this limits the risk of startling them. 2.2 Effective communication can have a positive impact on the lives of individuals with sensory loss because it can help maintain social contact, improve their physical and mental wellbeing and also help the individual come to terms with and cope with their sensory loss. It can also help to stop the individual feeling excluded and discriminated. 2.3 Information can be made accessible to individuals with sensory loss by using the senses they still have use off. For example if an individual has sight impairments, they can be taught sign language to be able to communicate and learn relevant
Within in a group of people the individual can have both positive and negative emotions heightened through the arousal from the presence of others. One of the negative emotions is the fear of judgment by others in the group this can affect the individuals performance. Fear can be a motivator in a positive way as well making the individual step up his or her efforts for the task the group is doing.
Listening and understanding how the patient is feeling and why the patient are reacting to the moment the way they are will lead to a better understanding and empathy. 4. Helping-trust relationships: Develop a helping-trusting relationship by using congruence, warmth, and empathy. 5. Acceptance of feeling, both positive and negative: Accepting of others feelings can lead to understanding.
Assessment Task: SHC 31 Promote Communication in health and social care or children’s and young people’s settings An Identification of the different reason people communicate Introduction: Communication is a tool with which we exercise our influence on others, bring out changes in our and others’ attitudes, motivate the people around us and establish and maintain relationships with them. Communication makes a major part of our active life and is a social activity. This social activity is pursued verbally through speech, reading and writing or non-verbally through body language. Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation, enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. As simple as communication seems, much of what we try to communicate–and others try to communicate to us–gets misunderstood, which can cause conflict and frustration in personal and professional relationships.
Although arguments may seem negative, it is possible to perceive positive outcomes towards a friendship by having occasional disputes. Good friendships sometimes have arguments to release tension. Both individuals might build up resentment over time; however, due to this build up, it is healthy to let one another know how they are feeling. One might do this by communicating what is bothering them; therefore, if the other person is a good friend, they will understand and not commit this blunder again. This helps both individuals learn to establish a compromise for future arguments to be unnecessary.
