It would not be able to cut back his hours and taking a class that is not required would take a lot of his time. The Study Skills class requires note taking in his current classes. This would allow him to put more attention on the note taking and possible less understanding of the material for the specific class. Which could possibly distract him and lose his focus. Sometimes when you remove yourself from a situation and reflect on it, you are able to find gaps and room for improvement in preparation for next time. You are sometimes able to analyse situations better afterwards than you are in the moment and when you look back on things, more often than not you will think “I wish I had said/done that at the time”. It helps to keep one’s mind fresh and with new ideas on how to deal with issues which I face during my sessions with a client. Self-awareness develops over a period of time and with experience. With time one can learn strategies to help in the development of self awareness so that personal thoughts and experiences does not affect this. Knowledge that is gained through personal experience can sometimes be a barrier when working but if one is personally aware of this, it helps to remove any barrier. It also question one’s own personal values, awareness and beliefs.
The basic way of treating someone with respect is to ensure that their interest and welfare is at the forefront of all dealings and interactions with them. I have had a chance of working with children and young people with their families as a trainee teacher. I ensured that I understood what children wanted by asking their opinions and also giving them choices whenever possible. In communicating with the children and their families, I ensured I used their preferred names and gave them opportunities to raise issues of concern and ask questions. I gave the families a chance to give input on the child’s development plans and how well they felt the child’s welfare could be improved.
