Nutritious Shopping Shannon Gilbert Walden University Abstract In this paper I look at how to shop for the most nutritious foods in grocery stores. I have observed that my local grocery store seems to have a specific layout in their placement of foods and the healthiest choices are typically found on the perimeter. This observation led me to question if perimeter shopping in all grocery stores would lead to better food choices. In order to test my hypothesis, I visited four grocery stores besides my usual one looking at their placement of foods. I found that shopping the perimeter in each store was the best way to ensure healthy food purchases. Although they varied slightly, in each store I usually entered the fresh produce section first. Next would either be the meat or dairy followed by the frozen food section. Some stores had their bakery placed in between the meat and dairy while others were after the frozen food. Introduction I have wondered for a long time how to develop a nutritious shopping plan. When I began shopping for my family I was young and unaware of how unhealthy processed foods were. After growing a garden full of fresh vegetables I learned how great fresh produce was compared to packaged food. Because of this I began paying attention to my surroundings when I shopped at my local grocery store. I noticed that if I stayed on the perimeter, I purchased mostly fresh produce, meat, dairy and bread. If I needed some type of vegetable that was not on hand in the fresh produce I chose frozen rather than canned. “Frozen produce is a fantastic substitute for fresh produce because it’s often frozen immediately after harvesting and can be purchased year-round.”(Winters, 2009) I began to wonder if a person could shop the perimeter of any store for nutritious foods.
