Nursing Routines and Diagnostic Equipment Q1. What and why was the procedure required? Jilly beans is a 9 year old female clumber spaniel, lemon and white colouring, was brought in by owner after dog had eaten bones and was presenting unwell. The dog at first did not show any large bowel signs and no abdominal pain. Was brought back to the clinic 8 days later still presenting unwell. By observation the dog had weight loss, server dehydration and was now showing signs of abdominal pain. Assessed- Had an ultrasound which confirmed/ shown a high small intestinal obstruction was placed in hospitalisation and immediately put on fluid therapy. Q2.What preparation did the patient require? The Preparation on the dog wasn’t difficult, as we were looking at the abdomen area , all we had to do was clip away any hair/fur trying to make a nice smooth surface for the ultrasound,. Q3.How was all the required equipment prepared? Clippers were selected from where they are kept in our practice. Ultra sound machine was set up on a portable table and wheeled into the consultation room, where it could be plugged into a power source and left to heat up for 5 minutes. Q4.how was the area Prepared For the procedure? The area in which this procedure took place was in the consultation room, as we can close off this section and make it really dark for the vet to use and operate the ultra sound machine properly.Q5. Briefly describe the procedures and the part you took in it? The procedure was an ultra sound on the dog’s abdominal organs to confirm the obstruction previously detected in the dogs small intestine, from eating bones a few days earlier. I helped restrain the dog from moving so the vet could get an accurate image. Q6.what were any specific patient requirements regarding the procedures&/or post procedure?
