The foetus was found not growing while the sarcoma kept growing in her seventh month pregnancy. She consulted and later rejected by doctors in private hospital for a caesarean birth. Empirical knowing focuses on evidenced based practice which leads to effective nursing practice. To be a competent nurse, you have to work on your empirical knowledge by attending stroke conferences, reading journals and continuing education units (CEU). Compared to Schultz and Meleis, empirical knowing validates nursing actions or interventions. Historically patients were not told they were dying or information about having a terminal disease was never disclosed to patients (Smith-Stoner,2011).But over the years or decades, that has changed because of emphasis on patient centered nursing practice (
Bringing together education and healing was a life-changing experience that made me realize that nursing is my true calling. Traditionally, nurses were viewed as caregivers. In today’s world, image of nursing profession changes as nurses play many other roles such as patient’s advocates, educators, managers, team members, facilitators, and experts. (Zerwekh, 2006). As I read the entries from my reflective journal, I could see how my focus shifted from assisting patient with his basic needs at the beginning of the nursing school to more comprehensive nursing care today.
University of Phoenix Material Personal Philosophy of Nursing Worksheet This is a philosophy of nursing that reflects the beliefs and values of your name Today’s date is October 14, 2010 I chose nursing as my profession because nursing is about caring for others in their time of greatest need. It is one of few professions in which you can go home each day and be happy for what you did. Although you may not realize it, but you have affected the patient’s life in some way. Nursing is about healing and curing the patient’s symptoms of disease or illness. In my nursing class, I learned that doctors cure the sickness and nurses cure the patient.
Typically nurses have always taught their patients how to manage their daily lives with an illness, but now the purpose is more on how the patient can remain healthy and what preventative measures the nurse needs to implement for their patients. Nursing roles and responsibilities have changed within the last ten years or so. The role of a nurse now is typically seen as being an advocates, educators, researchers, collaborators, partners, and policy-makers with a continued focus on community health. Nursing has become increasingly more involved in the process of health promotion. With budget cuts at facilities and high physician to patient scenarios, nurses implement
Advanced Nursing Roles Advanced practice nursing can be described as the future of nursing practice. Nurses who are trained to take on advanced nursing roles bring their creativity, intuition, and dedication to affect and change the healthcare system (Blais & Hayes, 2011). The number and demand of advanced practice nurses dramatically increased in the last decade. Despite the need for the higher level of nursing practice, there are many challenges that advanced practice nurses face every day. The purpose of this paper is to discuss opportunities, challenges, and practice requirements that Adult Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner has to overcome in order to address the needs and demands of the healthcare system in the state of New Mexico.
Obstetrical nurses identify themselves as advocates for laboring women (James, et al., 2003). But, Thorman, et al. (2006) in a Round Table Discussion of Perinatal Nurse Executives, states that, “much work is still needed to support appropriately assertive communication techniques when nurses have concerns about patient status”, to promote and ensure patient safety. My research interest is focused on identifying the barriers to assertiveness, or implementing the chain of command, when an obstetrical nurse is faced with clinical discord that threatens patient safety. This interest, sparked by quality assurance record reviews, led me down a path of communication factors and teamwork systems.

Once Khyra had started to lose weight she was removed from mainstream school and was instead taught from home by her mother. After her death in May 2008, court papers said that her death could have been prevented if there had been an adequate initial assessment of her family home by the educational welfare services. In December 2007, six months before Khyra died, her Deputy Headmistress had telephoned Social Services three times in 24 hours with concerns of Khyra’s absence after she was seen stealing food from other pupils’ bags. Anne Gondo a senior Social Worker from Birmingham Social Services had received a referral about Khyra from the Council’s Education Welfare Department. She had arranged a home visit with another Social Worker.
This experience greatly increased her knowledge of illness and death on families, leading to her great understanding for patient care and the formation of her nursing theory later in life. Peplua created the first master’s program for clinical specialists in psychiatric nursing. The practices that came from Hidegard Peplau theory should be used with all patients and would work in all nursing settings. All patients are affected in a positive way when the nurse remembers to treat her patients with care and work with them and not just on them. Many people believed that Peplau fostered the biggest changes in nursing since Florence Nighingale.
