The Impact on Nursing of the 2010 IOM Report on the Future of Nursing In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued special report titled “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” It is a thorough report at what a nurse role in a changing healthcare system. The report says that nursing education should progress to a higher level of education in order to serve in the ever changing profession of nursing and nurses should complete a higher levels of education and training, through a good education system that promotes continuous academic progression. (Institute of Medicine, 2010). According to The Institute of Medicine, in order to meet the demands of a changing healthcare system nurses must complete advanced level of education.
There was no specific profession of nursing before Florence Nightingale started to work in the field of nursing. In the modern world, there is a significant change in the nursing field. There are many nursing educational degrees. Two of them are Baccalaureate degree and Associates degree in nursing. Both baccalaureate degree and associate degree in nursing required to pass NCLEX exam in order to work as a registered nurse.
The BSN education offers a more in depth study in the knowledge of nursing diagnosis and implementation of the nursing process. The BSN is also more research driven. They look for more evidenced based practice to steer in the decision making process. The BSN furthers the studies learned in the AND program. It expands on community health, management, and critical thinking skills.
