Challenges to Health NU1065 The aim of this module is to discuss a case study, by researching a selected community to underpin and address the important issues around health and wellbeing, focusing on the challenges to adult’s health within a community and how as healthcare professionals we can address this. The community the author has chosen for this case study is an area within Preston city centre, Lancashire the north west of England, Lancashire city council (2009) estimates Preston’s population to be 134,600 with an age group of 0-14 being 23,700, 15-24 at 24,200, 25-44 at 37,100 and 45+ being 49,900 making the population of adults higher than children in Preston and adults are the main focus for the case study. The health issue the author has chosen for this case study is obesity NHS Choices (2010) explains obesity is a person classed with too much body fat with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30, this can be detected by your high in squares but you also need to take into other factors into account, such as sex gender and age, The World Health Organization (2011) explains that obesity is the fifths leading risk for global deaths, resulting in 2.8 million adults deaths each linking to other health issues caused through obesity such as diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers, therefore this indicates this is a major health issue, The Public Health Observatory (2007) indicates 24.5% of adults and 10% of children were classified obese in Preston, this is slightly lower to the South Ribble and Chorley in adults but higher in…show more content…
The World Health Organisation (2011) explains that health promotion is a process made to help gain control over health improve the impacts of heath issues, fourcusing on individuals behaviour, social and environmental looking at different strategies in ways to improve health globally , Ewles and Sinmett (2003) model suggests 5 different approaches to health promotion this being medical, behaviour change, educational, client centred and social change approach, The Royal College Of Nursing (2011) has started a educational training approach to tackling obesity by offering a one to two day training programme throughout the North of England for health care professionals, social workers and youth workers to enable them to gain more knowledge and a better understanding towards obesity as the Royal College Of Nursing (2011) believe that obesity has been ignored and misrepresented due to lack of knowledge and understanding that to combat obesity we need to understand it to treat it, Department Of Health (2011) explain they are also starting up a new service in 2012 to provide health promotion for a healthier living within the communities believing that this is the best way to tackle obesity by going straight to the people involved working together with councils, charities and health services providing education and suggesting that communities with a low health rating will get more support also more money to provide activities and keep fit schememes within their local areas, Barnett
