NT1210 – Lab 5.1-5.4 Janet D. Del Valle exercise 5.1.1 The IEEE standards cover more than just Ethernet. The 802.3 standard actually builds upon the 802.1 network architecture standard from IEEE. Briefly define the 802.1 standard and what it provides. Use your textbook and the Internet to research your answer. IEEE 802.1 handles the architecture, security, management and internetworking of local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN) and wide area area networks (WAN) standardized by IEEE 802. The following are key IEEE 802.1 tasks: • Designs and implements standards that regulate network management practices • Provides services, including LAN/MAN management, media access control (MAC) bridging, data encryption/encoding and network traffic management IEEE 802.1 is comprised of four groups that focus on different standards and policies in the following areas: • Internetworking • Audio/video (A/V) bridging • Data center bridging • Security The Internetworking group handles overall architecture, link aggregation, protocol addressing, network path identification/calculation and other technical practices and recommendations. exercise 5.1.2 The 802.3 family of standards has the format 802.3x where x is a sequence of letters specifying the new standards added to the 802.3 base standard. One of the enhancements to Ethernet is Power over Ethernet (PoE), in which Ethernet cable can provide power to remote, low-power devices that are not near an electrical outlet. What 802.3 standard originally defined PoE functionality? When was the standard enhanced, and what was the new standard name given for the enhancement? Use your textbook and the Internet to research your answer. exercise 5.1.3 Standard Cabling Maximum Length 10BASE5 Coaxial (Thicknet) 10BASE2 Coaxial (Thinnet) 10BASE-T UTP (Cat3, 5, 5e, 6) 100BASE-FX 400 m 100BASE-T
