“Aline’s Journey” by Edwidge Danticat
I shall in the following analyse and interpret the short story “Aline’s Journey” by Edwidge Danticat. During my statement, I shall talk about a characterisation of Aline, who is the main character in the story, the atmosphere, the language, the composition and finally the ending.
Aline is a girl, who was born in Haiti. Her family is very poor and lives under terrible conditions. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and is frequently attacked by hurricanes and floods. Of course, Aline and her family too feel the consequences of those horrifying facts, which make them want to escape to a better life in the USA. Here they hope they can make a better life and be treated better than what they are used to in their own country, which is corruption and violence.
These facts bring me to the next thing I want to discuss: the atmosphere in the short story.
The circumstances, under which Aline and her family is living, give us the feeling from the very beginning that something is not as it should be. Therefore, the atmosphere is very gloomy and negative. The atmosphere itself cannot be described in general, because it changes throughout the short story. The first part of the story is a description of their way of living, which gives us compassion for people, who, share their histories, confirm that this easily could be real. However, the atmosphere is calm and peaceful, when the family is together, whether they still are in Haiti or in prison in the USA. All the way through the story, a certain happy modesty reigns, even though the situation itself may seem tough and bad. It is as if the family knows they are going to survive as long as they can stick together. On the other hand, the author does describe the awful conditions and the fake hope, which the Haitians have; when they illegally immigrate to the USA for a
