Novo Nordisk April Wells Chemistry Honors Mrs. Rhinehart 09.19.12 1 Novo Nordisk is a global healthcare company with 89 years of ingenuity and direction in diabetes care (1). This company has a history, many ties to North Carolina, and products/careers that relate to chemistry. The story goes back farther than 89 years. It all began when August Krogh, a Nobel Prize winner and professor at the (1) University of Copenhagen, decided he wanted to produce insulin (2). Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas the islets of Langerhans that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood but Krogh wanted to produce a synthetic form of the substance to treat diabetes (3). This had already been discovered by a group of scientist at the University of (2) Toronto. Krogh was the first to bring insulin production to Denmark so he could treat those with diabetes, including his wife. In 1923, he joined forces with two men; Dr. Hans Christian Hagedorn (a specialist in in the regulation of blood (3) sugar) and August Kongsted (a pharmacist). Together they founded Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium. From the beginning August Krogh wanted for all patients with diabetes to be able to obtain insulin, because of his determination he sold the prescription for a minimum price. Because of this two brothers; Thorvald and 2 Harold Pedersen founded Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium in 1925. They soon became the biggest rivalry and the best in their field. After almost sixty years, Novo and Nordisk merged in 1989 to become one of the worlds largest biotechnology groups, Novo Nordisk (2). At the heart of the company they strive to prevent, treat, and ultimately cure diabetes (1). With this in mind, the use “The Triple Bottom Line” to do their business.
