Notes from a Small Island What is happiness? Aristotle defines happiness as the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence. Happiness has many different interpretations, definitions, and philosophies. Happiness does not have to be complicated, in all reality, it is simple to understand. Happiness is emotions we try to find by doing things that make us feel good. Happiness for you may not be what happiness is for me. For you, it may be feelings of passion, achievement, excitement, inspiration, and freedom. For me, it may be feelings of peace, satisfaction, comfort, grace, and serenity. Since happiness is doing things that make us feel good, judgment and perception play a big part in it. Whether you perceive a situation as good or as bad, will impact if you feel happy or unhappy. It doesn’t take much to make Bill Bryson happy while living or visiting Great Britain. He enjoyed the good and bad. Bryson did a lot of sightseeing, to include visiting the museums, cathedrals, and Stonehedge. He sat back and listened to the choir practice early one morning. What a great way to start your day. He found peace while watching the lights of passing ships bobbed and blinked in the dusky light. This reminds me of when I was on a cruise ship, sitting on the balcony, sipping a foo foo drink, staring out in the open ocean with no worries or stress, and glad to be there, then at work. That was very relaxing.
The pubs or restaurants in Great Britain are known for their food, beer, and service. Bryson dined at different types of restaurants to include Chinese and Indian, and ate “strange” foods such as pork pies and chocolate digestive biscuit. I don’t think I would eat those, even it was free. While staying at a hotel, Bryson requested a wakeup call at 0500. The attendant asked him if he would like breakfast in the morning. Bryson was greatly surprised
