Motivation may be defined as psychological forces that determine the direction of a person’s behavior in an organization. Motivation is central to management because it explains why people behave the way they do. In a 1-2 page paper, discuss the principle needs/desires of the typical employee. Then, using two motivation theories presented in the course readings, discuss how managers can best motivate their employees to succeed. Motivation may be defined as psychological forces that determine the direction of a person's behavior in an organization, a person's level of effort and a person's persistence in the face of obstacles. (Essential Contemporary Management, Fourth Edition, pg 297). On page 297, it also states that motivation is central to management because it explains why people behave the way they do in organizations. The text book talks about different kinds of motivations the first being intrinsically motivation behavior which is the behavior that is performed for its own sake. The second one is the Extrinsically motivated behavior which is the behavior that is performed to acquire material or social rewards or avoid punishment; the source of motivation is the consequences of the behavior, not the behavior itself. The next one is Prosocially motivated behavior is the behavior that is performed to benefits or help others. (Essential contemporary Management, Fourth Edition, pg 297-298). The text goes in to talk about the Theories the first one being Expectancy Theory. It was formulated by Victor H. Vroom in the 1960s. The motivation is high when workers believe that high levels of effort leads to high performance and high performance leads to the attainment of desired outcomes.
