Nonconformity In Ghost World

All throughout the movie Ghost World directed by Terry Zwigoff, the reoccurring theme was nonconformity and the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The transition from adolescence to adulthood can be difficult, which caused Enid to not want to conform to societies expectations, but to be an individual who doesn’t care what other people think. On the other hand, her best friend Rebecca didn’t have a very hard time transitioning from childhood to being an adult. During the transition out of highschool to living on your own it can seem very overwhelming for young people and sometimes they take a little longer to find their path to success then other people. They all tried to dress a certain way and to go to certain places like Starbucks and Wowsville diner. These particular two places have been opened all over and seem like that are taking over the world. In some areas there is a Starbucks on almost every street corner. When they went to Wowsville, the fifties diner, inside playing on the old music players was rap and hip hop music, which obviously wasn’t the normal thing that would be playing in a place like that. The diner was trying to be something that the kids like to try to suck people in to the ever changing world. This related to the title of the movie because once you get sucked into something you lose your individuality and you blend in with everyone around you. She got a job at Starbucks and Enid thought that she was conforming and not sticking to the plan they had made for the future. Rebecca realized she can’t just do whatever she wants and expect to have everything handed to her; she knows if she wants to have a good life she is going to need a job. Rebecca and Enid were going to get an apartment together but Enid wasn’t mature enough at the beginning to live on her own so Rebecca got her own apartment, and eventually Enid was going to move in.
