Perhaps this is why he killed his father. He may have blamed his father for the condemnation. Since he could not know whether or not Jesus raised the dead he chose nihilism. His whole life became one of cruelty. Since his life didn’t matter—neither did anyone else’s.
In “The sniper”, the sniper finally realized he killed his own brother so he also fell in a huge suffering. What he did is just following the order that his leader give to him. He finished his mission and also killed his brother. When he realized it, it must be the biggest tragedy that he had never experienced. Both of the two characters faced the same consequence which is they have to obey the duty even though they will lose their either friend or brother.
He claims that he was drafted and therefore he had no choice. I feel that Private Huber had the choice of following his orders or listening to his conscience. There are many things that he could’ve done to escape going into the war. If he did refuse to shoot down the Czechs, of course he would’ve been punished. But when he decided to go to the war, he killed hundreds of people.
In effect, they have killed a mockingbird. Boo Radley is another example of a human “mockingbird”. He has spent his entire life as a prisoner of his own home because his father was overcautious in punishing him for a mistake he made as a child. Boo Radley observes the world around him, causing no harm to anyone; he then goes on to save Jem and Scout’s lives when Bob Ewell attacks them. The sheriff, Heck Tate, determines that Bob Ewell’s death will be ruled as an accident to avoid forcing Boo to go to trial, even though Boo killed him to protect the children.
This essay will explore this interpretation of Haig and the generals, but in order to provide a balanced view, I will also consider the positive interpretations of Haig as a leader, as many sources from the time and recently praise him as a good leader. At the time of the war and after, soldiers criticised Haig and the generals , Haig was criticised because he made commands without being in trenches. In source B2 a soldier who had watched his friends die around him due to Haigs incompetence and bad planning, wrote “it was pure bloody murder. Douglas Haig should have been hung, drawn and quartered for what he did on the Somme. The cream of British manhood was shattered in less than 6 hours.” This suggests that he wanted Haig to be punished due to his loss of so many of his own men, but also due to his own resentment towards him.
However, let’s think another way when your child is killed, could you forgive the murderer? This is really a hard question for anyone to answer ‘yes’. That is because you are human, you are not God, and you couldn’t give your child’s life away to save another. However, in case the murderer is redeemed, how should this happen? ‘Dead Man Walking’ tells us about an inmate who has tried himself to find redemption from his victim’s families and in God’s love.
When his soldier Ted Lavender died all he could do was cry and blame himself for his death, “He felt shame. He hated himself.... this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of war.” (O’Brien, The Things They Carried 42) but he didn’t let that very heart-wrenching emotion of feeling responsible for someone’s death cloud his judgment or cause him to take his job lightly. Towards the end of the story he stepped up, over-coming the guilt he felt after the death of Ted Lavender. Learning from his mistakes and changing the way he lead his platoon “He would not tolerate laxity. He would show strength, distancing himself.” (O’Brien, The Things They Carried 100) He showed courage while seeing the bigger picture telling himself “that his obligation was not to be loved but to lead.” (O’Brien, The Things They Carried 101) Masculinity is very apparent in this platoon.
In McCarthy’s, No Country for Old Men, money plays a significant role when it comes to ethical decision making. In the beginning, Llewelyn Moss comes across a crime scene where drug traffickers and drug dealers are brutally murdered by a third party, in pursuit for the money. Regardless, Moss greedily steals the money but leads him and his family to dangerous situations. In addition, Carson Wells is hired as a bounty hunter to kill Anton Chigurh and get the money, however, he ends up dying in the process. Finally, the crime and violence over money is so senseless, that Sheriff Ed-Tom Bell retires to prevent his life from being taken away.
John had to make a decision between life and death and he chose to die. He chose to die because he didn’t want to live a lie while other innocent people were killed. The fact that John decided to die made him a strong and righteous person. Although John made the wise decision and died to protect his family from accusations at the same time he didn’t make the wise decision because once he is hung the state owns his property and his family doesn’t have
187 The fact that this man, a man of integrity and heart died because he didn’t fallow America’s way of business is distressing. This man’s whole goal was to help the people in need in his land, and America hated that. Because he refused to bow down to America our presidents thought he was a liability and he lost his life. How can we as Americans not feel like we are the world’s whole issue? We are the reason our world is crashing right before our eyes.
