Case Overview The case is entitled Carlos Ghosn and Renault- Nissan: Leading for Global success. This case was placed under the chapter, “Global strategy and Organization” in the text book “international Business: strategy, Management and New Realities”. The case demands an analysis of Carlos Ghosn in terms of his leadership and contribution to Nissan’s company and an overall evaluation of Nissan’s international strategy. In what ways is Carlos Ghosn a visionary leader? What traits does he possess that are typically of a visionary leader? A visionary leader is a senior human capital in an organization that provides the strategic guidance necessary to manage efficiency, flexibility, and learning in internationalizing firms such as Nissan. Ghosn helped rescue a sinking ship (Nissan) from being completely submerge under water. With his expertise and guidance Nissan the once troubled car marker evolved to a corporate success story. He started Nissans evolution process by closing down inefficient factories, reduced Nissans workforce, curbed purchasing costs, shared operations and introduced new products. Ultimately, Nissan became on of the world’s most profitable automotive companies. Some may consider him a savior but he is undoubtedly a Visionary leader. There are traits that a visionary leader must posses and Ghosn possessed the following traits that allowed him to become such a leader: Visionary leadership requires management to acquire a global mindset. Ghosn illustrated this trait of open mindedness when he reinforced his global aspirations by making English, not Japanese, the official language of Nissan. By doing this he aimed to breakdown one language barrier to allow Japanese managers to better communicate with its English speaking counterparts. Management
