Research Paper on Nirvana / Kurk Cobain Nirvana is a band that was instrumental to me when it came to discovering what I appreciated in music. Nirvana was an American Rock band that was formed by guitarist and lead singer Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. The band went through changes in its drummers until it found Dave Grohl in 1990. Nirvana is single handedly responsible for the birth of what became to be known as grunge rock and has gone on to sell over 50 million albums worldwide. The meaning of the word nirvana is the extinction of passion or lust, hatred, and delusion. It means being free from mind-contaminants such as anger, lust, and craving a state of inner peace. Nirvana’s sound was essential in the transition from 80’s rock to modern rock. The difference is that 80’s rock focused on partying and the excesses of life; while modern rock focuses on real world issue such as personal beliefs, politics, and personal uniqueness. Nirvana helped set the stage for the future of music and the sound that we are accustomed to today, without Nirvana the whole spectrum of modern music would sound and feel differently. In the late 1980s Nirvana established itself as part of the Seattle grunge scene. This scene was unique to Seattle and had a sound unlike anything previously recorded. Nirvana signed with the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989, and released its first album Bleach. The band developed a sound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses. The band went on to be discovered by DGC Records, a major label who recognized and appreciated the band’s unique sound. After signing with DGC Records, Nirvana found unexpected success with “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, the first single from the band’s second album Nevermind in 1991. There possibly isn’t an album in
