You can barely read a magazine or flip on the television without hearing about one of these new hip-hop/rock groups. Media such as Rolling Stone and MTV treat these bands like miraculously they created this "new" genre of music. Bands such as Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Sugar Ray are treated as creative geniuses when they are only doing things that have already been done before. Some of these new bands are very talented, but bands such Run DMC, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rage Against the Machine, blended the seemingly mismatched flavors of rap and rock with brilliant results long before any of these bands had ever even seen a turntable.
The earliest example of this mix of hip-hop and hard rock, came in 1985 with the release of Run DMC's "Rock Box".
4/27/13 Nirvana: A Quest for The Hall of Fame When it comes to an album that defined, shaped, and aspired a whole generation there’s few that come close to Nirvana’s 1991 Nevermind album. With the release of just one single, Nirvana not only murder the popular glam rock scene but gave birth to a new genre known as grunge/alternative. The Nevermind album has not only sold over 10 million copies alone in the United States, but it has also gone on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide. Spite these tremendous feats; Nirvana still remains unrecognized as a band, inspiration, and hieroglyph of a whole generation. As of 6/15/2013 Nirvana will technically be eligible to be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame.
Daft Punk grew interested in electronic music shortly before reaching the age of 18, which led Brancowitz to leave the group and create the indie band Phoenix. In 1993 Bangalter presented a demo of Daft Punk material to Stuart Macmillan of Slam that led to their first single "The New Wave". Bangalter also uses Bass guitar, synthesizer, vocals, guitar, drum machine, vocoder, programming and the talk box to create Daft Punk's music. Daft Punk combines elements of house with synthpop and creates a catchy, glitchy, robotic kind of music with their later albums becoming more like their roots with a combination of rock and pop.
As Wahl (1999) points out, this was largely due to their hit single and cover of Aerosmith’s 1975 song, ‘Walk This Way’. This was also the first time that a hip hop group had collaborated with a non-rap artist. Wahl (1999) also claims that the critical factor for Run-DMC’s breakthrough into the mainstream was because of the MTV music video, which gained huge success. The video is a snapshot at the idea of traditionally white suburban consumed rock music and the traditionally black-urban consumed rap music. Throughout the video there is tension between both Aerosmith and Run-DMC, until at the
Red Hot Chili Peppers are a Californian rock band whom has combined aspects of funk and hip-hop with rock and roll, pioneering funk metal. The band started in 1984. From the time they formed in the early 1980s, the Red Hot Chili Pepper have played an innovative blend of punk, funk, rap, and metal. While they gained most of their notoriety for their energetic shows as well as their battles with addictions, their sound exerted a strong influence on alternative rock throughout the 1990s. With various members undertaking solo projects or touring with other bands, and their lack of permanency in the lead guitar spot, the Peppers always seemed on the verge of breaking up.
For my second historical event, I will be informing you on the 9/11 terrorist attack on the U.S. which relates to the band through one of Green Day’s hit songs, Wake Me Up When September Ends. Green Day is an American punk rock band that originally derived from the band, Sweet Children, which the two 14 year olds Billie Joe Armstrong (lead guitarist, vocalist) and Mike Dirnt (bass; born Mike Pritchard) had formed in Rodeo, California. By 1989, the group had added drummer John Kiffmeyer and changed their name to Green Day. Shortly after the band released their first studio album, 39/Smooth, the band replaced Kiftmeyer with Tre Cool (born Frank Edwin Wright, III); Tre Cool became the band's permanent drummer. Later after playing in the band as a session and touring guitarist for 13 years, Jason White (guitarist and backing vocalist) became a full member.
Cobain actually detested hitting the Billboard charts, however, after his death in 1994, Nirvana become a worldwide rock legend who became commercialized to fit the mainstream (Erlewine). One year after the band was formed, they released their first single “Love Buzz” which did not get that much attention (Erlewine). A year later, their first album “Bleach” was released (Erlewine). Even though neither one of these hit the billboard 200 nor “attracted” any major label companies, Nirvana was satisfied with what they had accomplished; they had become very popular among college students and the British weekly press by selling 35,000 copies of their unique, indie style music (Erlewine). With a small following, Nirvana took the world by storm with their second album “Nevermind” at the end of 1989 with several hits (Erlewine).
They became quite famous following the recontextualization of British and American hardcore punk musical scene. Dead Kennedy’s debut album is fast and furious. From the first note of Kill the Poor you know you’re listening to something new and exciting. The appeal of the Dead Kennedys is they don’t
Tupac Shakur: Life after Death Tupac Amaru Shakur was notably an American rapper and actor. He was born on June 7th 1971 in the East Harlem Section of New York City and was slain during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 7th 1996 at the age of 25. Although his music was filled with profanity, violence, and graphic themes they were also about hardship in ghettos, racism, and problems in society. He is the top selling hip hop artist of all time, with 75 million albums sold worldwide and starred in many critical acclaimed films in 1990s, such as “Juice” and “Gridlock'd”. He was named after Tupac Amaru II, who was the leader of an indigenous uprising in 1780 against the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire, by his mother.
It gained very big success, especially at the end of 80-s. This style of music engaged teenagers with its unpredictability and brilliance. That was the music that all teenagers wanted to hear. So, both rock and rap occurred at that moment, when they were needed. But not only social factors were the reason for creating rock or rap, the main think was the creation of new musical instruments followed with the new style of playing.
