Nikola Tesla Nikola Tesla was an electrical engineer. He wanted to help the world by providing the necessities people need. As a result, he invented the transformer to send electricity around the world. He successfully made it to the top with Edison. After that he surpassed Edison creating the transformer and AC: alternating current. That led to everyone being able to have access to power, but some people couldn’t afford it. On July 9, 1856, Tesla was born in Smilijan, the Province of Lika, Croatia, and he died January 7, 1943. Tesla was one of 5 children, 2 boys, and 3 girls. He was only married to his work and the world. His Father was Reverend Milutin Tesla, pastor of the Serbian Orthodox Church. His mother was a homemaker who received no education but he credited her for his photographic memory and inventive genius. Tesla spent much of his life inventing beginning at age 2. He grew up surrounded by strong ethnic traditions: Serbian songs, poetry, dancing, storytelling, weaving, and Saint Day Celebrations. During his lifetime he liked to work with radio and electrical transmitters because he thought they could be used to move electricity wireless. When he was 5 he invented a paddleless waterwheel that, led to the bladeless turbine. Also, when he was 5 his older brother died which led to a life of guilt, obsessions, and phobias which fueled his determination to excel and look out for others. In 1875, he enrolled himself in Austrian Polytechnic School in Graz. After that he went to work at Edison’s Telephone Subsidiary in Paris in 1882. In 1883, he successfully completed experiments determining the advantage of AC power over Edison’s DC: direct current. He came to the US, in 1884 to meet with Edison and later was hired by him.
