Nikki Giovanni Mothers (1968) Writing Topic: Some social critics argue that the failure of parents (and, some add, schools) to teach values to children and bullying to drug use and violence. What is the poet’s implied claim about the teaching of values? Reflecting on your childhood, can you recall a moment when you learned a lesson about values? How do you think children should be tough values? In her poem “Mothers”, Nikki Giovanni talks about the relationship she have with her mother and the struggles her mother went through. The poet’s implied claim is the importance of mothers and how much they affect our lives today by the good and bad values they teach us. Nikki thought of her mother as a beautiful woman, but she put so much faith and trust in men. Part of her mother’s struggle was waiting for Nikki’s father to come home “she was very deliberately waiting perhaps for my father to come home from his night job “. Many teens and kids learn very bad habits at school and take them home afterwards. This often causes inconvenience for parents because the bad habits they transport home often contradict the good values taught at home. School Safety, self-control and Drug-Free Environment are some of the points parents are concerned about. Teachers must explain to children the dangers of alcohol and drugs use and that keeping friends or companion with those who abuse and use forbidden drugs can adversely affect their own safety, self-reliance and relationship with families and friends who are concerned about them.
