How Nike Changed the Market of Athletics Matt Jennings Junior Project North Beach High School May 26, 2011 When Bill Bowerman made his first pair of Nikes in his wife’s waffle iron and eventually created Nike Inc, American athletics were forever changed. He was a track coach at the university of Oregon, he began experimenting making athletic shoes. He eventually made a pair using his wife's waffle iron and he had created his first pair of Nikes. Over the next couple decades he would have created the biggest and best athletic shoe and appeal company in the world. Through good marketing strategies and a long list of superstar athletes they endorse, they have become a global power in the sports world. William Jay “Bill” Bowerman was born on February 19, 1911 in Portland Oregon. His father was Jay Bowerman, was a former governor of Oregon. His mother grew up in Fossil where the family moved in 1913 after his parents divorced. Bill had two older siblings. His sister Mary Elizabeth or they called her Beth for short and a brother named Dan. He had another brother Thomas that was his twin but Thomas died in an elevator accident at the age of 2 years old. Bill attended Medford and Seattle schools before returning to Medford. He participated in many some school extracurricular activities. He was in the high school band and also was on the state champion football team his junior and senior years. He first met Barbara Young, the women he would marry while a high school student in Medford. In 1929, Bill Bowerman attended the University of Oregon to play football and major in journalism. He joined and was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. After graduation he got a job teaching biology and coaching football at Franklin High School in Portland in 1934. However in 1935, he moved back to Medford to teach and coach football. He and Barbara married on
