History of American Football Mr. Britton/Francis PSE4U Per. 3 Friday, January 17, 2014 The sport of American football has originated from two sports, soccer and rugby, which are popular around the world. In the 1880s a rugby player from Yale, Walter Camp, made slight changes to the rules of rugby that transformed it into the new game of American football. Camp contributed many changes from rugby and soccer to American football from the line of scrimmage to the snap from center to quarter-back. The most significant difference from rugby and American football was the system of ‘downs’ in which a team is only given a number of plays to cover a certain area of the field in order to keep possession of the ball.
In Friday Night Lights, Shows how football was everything, even to teachers, and everyone who was affiliated with the school. In the book, you notice how some dreams had been crushed, the player that shows it the most it Booby Miles, a running back who was set to have an outstanding year until he was forced out with a leg injury. You get to see how Booby deals with his whole life including his fights with racism. I have seen the book, and also the movie. I honestly liked the movie a little better.
He also emphasized the importance of other positions besides the running back, such as a defensive lineman to stop a running back. Next came the Four Hoursemen from Notre Dame. Historians argue that they may have been the best backfield in the history of football. Like Red Grange, they also brought in massive crowds of people, making football more popular. The Four Horsemen weren't big, but they all had speed, agility, and strength.
The quarterback glanced at the scoreboard and saw only 10 seconds left in the game. He knew this final try would determine if they win the game or not. He weighted his options whether he should pass or run the ball. And in the back of his head he even wondered if he should run the ball himself. As everyone lined up at the the line of scrimmage everything seemed to move in slow motion.
But the best of them I would say is the college level or National College Athletics Association (NCAA) league; it's the meat and potatoes of it all. College football is where it started, not high school or the NFL. Even so, some folks may ask, is college football really necessary? Is the physical and possible mental damage really worth it just for some fun? The possible injuries that a College player could be induced with are astronomical every time he steps on the field.
