New Interventionism Essay

The New Interventionism: Is there actually anything new about it and has it been a success in comparison with traditional intervention? Intervention in states by external actors has been taking place for centuries. However, in recent years it has become a main talking point around the area of human rights and human security. This is as a result of the changing views of people and governments about numerous things such as state sovereignty and the process of intervention itself. It is because of these changes in perceptions that New Interventionism came about. This essay will focus on my opinions on various issues surrounding intervention and more specifically New Interventionism. I will be evaluating the fall of traditional intervention and I will discuss why I believe a new form of intervention was inevitable and necessary. I will also talk about the theories underlying New Interventionism and whether or not I believe the new principles on intervention are indeed adequate. I will use reference to a couple of countries throughout the course of my essay to try and highlight both the successes and failures that New Interventionism has had since it’s implementation in the early 1990s. One country that I will focus in on is Cambodia. I chose Cambodia because it is a country that I have had many personal experiences with and therefore a lot of opinions on, moreover I believe that the example of Cambodia can be used when discussing both the traditional form of intervention and also New Interventionism. In regard to intervening bodies I will focus mainly on the UN despite there being many other similar actors. By discussing, evaluating and comparing all of the topics highlighted above I hope to come to a conclusion at the end of the essay as to whether or not New Interventionism is actually that different than it’s traditional form. I will finally discuss my own thoughts
