1. The graph shows a steady decline in the percentage of self-describing Anglicans in Australia, approximately a 20% decline from 1901 to 2006. This is resultant of the increasing immigration patterns in Australia and also the increase in the influences of the secular world in which the adherents live in. Denominational switching to protestant variants poses to be another factor in reducing the percentage of self-describing Anglicans in Australia. Together these factors create a significant decrease in the percentage of self-describing Anglicans in Australia.
Religions such as Islam are on the increase unlike Christianity which is declining at a rapid rate. However other factors such as in new religious movements and New-Age spirituality as evidence of a resacrilisation of society. Although opponents such as Bruce, argue that the actual numbers engaging with new religious movements and New-Age spirituality is relatively small and marginal to society. There is evidence that can prove the theory of secularisation, such as statistics show that only 6.3% of adults attended church on a Sunday in 2005, therefore churchgoing has halved since Wilsons research in the 1960’s and it is predicted to fall again to 4.7% by 2015, Sunday school attendance had declined as well and now only a small amount of children attend. However others may disagree with the view of Secularisation such as Martin who denies the view that there was ever a ‘golden age’ of religion and he argues that the reason for higher attendance of church in the past is due to the view that it was seen as respectable to attend church.

The article “No Babies” by Russell Shorto discusses how the population in Europe is drastically decreasing because the low birth rate and higher death rate. He discusses how the birth to death rate is very unbalanced as well, which is a result of the declining population. European culture is feared be lost due to the fact that the majority of the European population is mainly made up of older generations and few younger. In the article Population “7 Billion”, Robert Kunzig discusses how the population worldwide is increasing drastically. He discusses that although the population is growing, our planet may not have all the resources it needs to accommodate the growing population.
MIGRATION ASSIGNMENT “Outline and discuss the similarities and differences in the treatment of Indo-Chinese refugees in the 1970’s and post 2000 refugees in Australia.” The treatment of refugees in Australia has slowly been changing over the last 38 years. The first wave of Indo Chinese refugees arrived in Australia in 1975, after the Vietnam War (Macleay, 2011). Refugees arriving in Australia after 2000 from countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia and Sudan have also been as a result of war. (Migration and Refugees, 2008) The response of the Australian Government, people and media has all been as a result of the influx of people seeking refuge in Australia. Australia accepted more than 100,000 refugees from Vietnam and neighbouring countries
Another reason due to the high birth rate in countries such as Ethiopia is the lack of use of contraceptives. Stage 3 changes less than stage 2 does from stage 1, as the population continues to increase rapidly, but the death rate continues to fall, but finally the birth rate begins to decline alongside it. Stage 3 can be seen in countries such as India, and the USA (surprisingly) as families start to realise that having more children is more of a burden than a form of support, and they don’t need to have as many children as very few are dying in childbirth. The continuing decline in the death rate is due
Besides, the immigrants with different cultures often have different morals standards and religion beliefs, which is always the potential cause of contend and crime. So , sometimes, the crime rate is relative with the number of immigrants. As well, some people claim that the less jobs and higher unemployed rate caused by Immigration, and there are some native Australians to miss out on jobs that are taken up by immigrants. “Australia now has 1 million unemployed and to add 100,000 migrants each year is insanity. These people can only take jobs from the existing pool or join the dole queue.
Assess the view that secularisation has been a feature of only modern European societies (33 Marks) Secularisation can be defined as ‘the process whereby religious beliefs, practices and institutions lose social significance’. Secularisation is a feature of modern European societies, such as Britain. Weber has identified that church attendance on Sundays has dropped from 10%-15% to 6% in 2005, church weddings and baptisms as well as Sunday school attendance have also declined. Wilson has highlighted that a feature of modern European societies is the drop in church attendance on Sundays. Most recent research conducted shows that attendance is projected to drop from 6.3% to 4.7% by 2015.
Examples include the large fuel tax protests of winter 2000, the Make Poverty History campaign, the march against the Iraq war in 2003 – which drew 2 million people - and the widespread social movements of 2011, such as the now-famous ‘Occupy London’. The decline in electoral turnout could merely reflect a preference for different forms of participation, especially single-issue campaigning – which increased with the emergence of new issues, such as feminism, environmentalism or globalisation. This may be caused by the decline in party identification (as mentioned above) and the trend towards class dealignment, which further decreased indentification with a party system traditionally based around class. Changes in the governmental structure, such as the introduction of ‘e-petitions’ – where a petition getting 100,000 signatures triggers a debate in parliament – reflect this. This strongly suggests that political participation cannot simply be measured in terms of electoral turnout, as other forms of participation are becoming more popular.
This shows that nuclear families now have decreased. As well as that, reconstituted families are also an increase in Britain due to the rise in divorce. This means more step families are becoming visible in Britain. This can happen due to broken marriage, adoption or even death. Cohabitation and single sex families have all started to become the norm in Britain today.
