We humans have an unquenchable desire for all that meets our eyes and in most cases; we desire what we cannot handle. From our infant years to our toddler years, we have always desired what we saw – from a bottle of milk, to a toy car or a pink Barbie. As we grow up and finally reach teenage hood, our desires jump out the window and spiral out of control. We start to develop an appetite for fruits of trees we cannot reach. Within a blink of an eye, teenagers are infected with Sexually Transmitted Infections and a sixteen year old girl walks around with a bulged belly and invincible Romeo holding her soft hand. Hundreds of babies are deprived a life through abortion while others are given a sad opportunity to live a life of poverty and ill health. All this happens because we teenagers wanted a taste of medicine which was not prescribed for us. As teenage boys, we want to be respected and praised by our fellow peers and the best way to achieve this is for us to conduct ourselves with an impeccable behaviour. Instead, most of us join into violent gangs and the only achievement they get from their peers is FEAR. These gangs that most teenage boys join into transforms them into fighting machines and children that have no respect towards their parents and teachers. In gangs peer pressure is friendly advice and with more than 14% of South African teenagers in gangs, we are heading to a future which shall be roamed by abusive fathers and prisons overflowing. My fellow teenagers, if we continue on this quest of growing an appetite for fruits of trees we cannot climb, we shall be leading ourselves into a cage carved from our own regrets and mistakes.
