Theories are what research and practice are guided by. Nurses use theories every day in practice even when they might not know it. There have been many different theories developed in the past. In nursing, nurses combined more than one theory to practice. Betty Neuman completed her nursing education in 1947 though a diploma degree program in Akron, Ohio (Sitzman & Wright Elchelberger, 2011). She then later earned her bachelor degree in public health and psychology and master’s degree in mental health both from the University of California, Los Angeles, public health consultation and her Ph.D in clinical psychology. She also received an honorary doctorate from Grand Valley State University (Sitzman & Wright Elchelberger, 2011, p. 77). She was a pioneer of nursing involvement in mental health (Alligood, 2010). Betty Neuman currently lives and works in Ohio. Neuman continues in active, private practice as a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist, with an emphasis on pastoral counseling (Alligood, 2010). Initially, Neuman Systems Model (NSM) was developed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1970 by Betty Neuman, Ph.D., RN (Alligood, 2010). The Neuman Systems Model is a unique, open-systems-based perspective that provides a unifiying focus for approaching a wide range of international health concerns (Neuman Systems Model, n.d.). Betty Neuman developed The Neuman Systems Model: Application to Nursing Education and Practice. The philosophic base of the Neuman Systems Model encompasses wholism, a wellness orientation, client perception and motivation, and a dynamic systems perspective of energy and variable interaction with the environment to mitigate possible harm from internal and external stressors, while caregivers and clients form a partnership relationship to negotiate desired outcome goals for optimal health retention,
