A lawyer, who is one of the attendees, suggested claiming land rights through the court system as a test case. Eddie Mabo was chosen as a leader by the Murray Islanders to challenge the legal rights of the land in the High Court. However the court decided on the case that Eddie Mabo had no rights to succeed the land. Eddie Mabo was overwhelmed, but he kept on trying all legal procedure and he appealed it to the High Court of Australia. In January 1992, when he was only fifty-six years of age, he died of cancer.
Nelson Mandela & Susan B. Anthony The former South African president Nelson Mandela left his mark on the world by becoming one of the most iconic world leaders in history. He accomplished many political and social changes for South Africa that changed the countries history. Mandela left behind a legacy of change when two decades ago he put an end to the legalized segregation of race in South Africa. The policy known to South Africa as ‘apartheid’ was the main governing factor of the country. It ruled for legalized racial separation within the country since the colonial times.

Galloway Pete Kilner: I read this while at the Infantry Officer Advanced Course. I was struck by how Hal Moore and his commanders knew their Soldiers, by the things Moore did to create a winning culture and by how unpredictable war can be. Another big takeaway was that despite the brutality and emotions of combat, a leader must remain calm, see the big picture, and anticipate the “next steps” for his unit and the enemy.

“The best thing we can do is get ourselves rescued,” (Golding, pg.53). Ralph still shows the best of a person when he is selfless. By wanting to get off the island like everyone else he knows what it takes to get off because his dad is in the marines. In the novel, “Lord of the Flies,” by William Golding, he emphasizes that Ralph is an ego in the book by keeping everyone together and safe. What Ralph does is he teaches us to be selfless and try to help other people before ourselves.

Diana Davis-Nesmith The source of my motivation to be educated is my brother. He is the source of my motivation because; he was sentenced to serve fourteen years in a state penitentiary for false accusations. With all that time being taken from him he didn’t let that stop him. While incarcerated he attended Nyack College where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Once released from prison he went on to Stony Brook University, one of the top SUNY colleges, where he attained his Masters Degree in Social work.
As peaceful protests would turn into massacres, violent clashes amongst the two groups were beginning to resemble a civil war. Nelson Mandela was released from his 26-year prison sentence, for heading the violent protest group “Spear of the Nation”, as a recreated man. Being a symbol of the nation he united those who were restless of the burdening conflict that South Africa had subjected itself to. Although beginning with mainly black support, his humanitarian message reached many open ears in the white population. Those who felt the conflict was detrimental to their freedom united and supported Mandela.
