In the memoir “In the Sanctuary of Outcasts” written by Neil White, the author himself was convicted of bank fraud in the mid 1990’s and was sentenced to eighteen months in a federal prison. He embarks on a life journey filled with leprosy patients, and from these outcasts, he gains the courage to move on and become a better human being in the process and learns that even a selfish con man like he has a chance at being redeemed. I thought that this was a well written and a compelling read. I enjoyed reading about the way Neil learned and grew as a person during his year of incarceration. There were also some very interesting characters in the memoir. I was quite fond of Ella and Doc. I thought that it was amazing that someone as brilliant as Doc ended up in prison. But the thing that I admired about him was the fact that he did not let the time that he was incarcerated and his brilliance go to waste, instead he uses that time to develop a cure for impotence in men. I believe that Ella has had the most impact on Neil. The story of her life was quite sad and touching. At the age of twelve she was brought to the center by her father and ever since then, he never returned and she has been there all her life. As time went on she was diagnosed with leprosy and lost her legs due to its effects at the age of thirty-three. Though Ella was abandoned by her father and left alone at the center at Carville for lepers, she still continued to smile and welcome new patients and inmates. This shows that even in the darkest of times true strength comes from within. There are many lessons that this memoir teaches. One of which is derived from Ella's cola bottle story, which ends with the moral that a leopard cannot change its spots.
