Dylan Fiolek Prejudice in the South Racial prejudice was beyond horrible in the 1960s. A time to kill was a movie about a white lawyer who defends a black man for shooting to white woman. The black man raped and beat his daughter. To kill a Mockingbird was a book about a white lawyer who defends a black man. They accuse him of raping and beating a young white woman.
In the 1930s, African Americans were already treated unfairly, but, Tom being accused of raping a white woman made his life awful. Tom was ruled guilty in the trial even though all the evidence pointed toward him being innocent. For example, in the movie version of To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus makes a point to ask the sheriff what side the bruises on Mayella's face were. After he told her that they were on the right side, Atticus knew that Tom's left arm could not move so, how could he have hit her? Anyways, even Tom knew that he would be guilty, for example, in chapter 19 it says "'Mr.
A few things that I think are unjust in the book were Tom Robinson’s trial and the teachers. Some things that are just in my eyes but were not legal was when Boo Radley killed Mr. Ewell, it was just because he saved Jem and Scout’s lives, but unjust because he did not abide by the legal system. First, Tom’s Robinson’s trial was completely unjust. Tom Robinson was falsely convicted of rape. He was wrongfully convicted by an all-white jury, which at that time, racism was the norm.
On his way to another jail, he was shot by a few white men who hunted him down (Lee, 2006). Because of the bigotry involved in this movie, Tom Robison’s life was hugely affected. If he were a white man, he probably would have never been sent to jail or killed. If only Tom knew that the coming years would bring justice to blacks in the U.S…. The early 1950’s through the late 1960’s began the Civil Rights Movement, the social movements in the United States that were aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against African Americans and restoring voting rights to them.
Dally lost his innocence at the age of 10 when he killed a man, and Johnny lost his innocence at the age of 16 when he killed Bob Sheldon. “I killed him. I killed that boy”, Johnny Cade. Sometimes, people don’t even have to do something wrong to lose their innocence, they just have to witness something of wrongdoing to lose their innocence. Ponyboy just had to see Johnny kill Bob and that was enough to make him lose his innocence.
First of all, the Ewell family takes Tom advantage of. He is accused that he rapes and harms Mayella who is Mr. Bob Ewell’s daughter. As Mayella says, “That nigger yonder took advantage of me an’ if you fine fancy gentlemen don’t wanta do nothing’ about it then you’re all yellow stinkin’ cowards” (Lee 188). This situation shows that black people in that period of time has no right in the same level as white people. If they get too close to white people as Tom Robinson does, it would bring their lives into disaster.
He explained that white men always win and cheat, so the white men are the victors but the white man is always a bad man. This shows that it can be prejudice because Tom`s story was not heard and he was accused of being guilty and so he was killed. In cases of Tom being wrongly accused, harassment by others, on Scout and Atticus defending the jail can have an opinion of people that is destructive. When the group of men came to kill Tom, it shows that if Scout and Jem did not have a father would be the same thing for Walter Cunningham.
Tom Robinson had the most prejudice used against him in To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom was a black field hand that was accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father, said that Tom had raped his daughter. Tom however did not rape Mayella, she tried to seduce him. Bob
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee displays several examples and representations of the Jim Crow Laws. Harper Lee illustrated how the Jim Crow Laws affected Calpurnia the black housemaid and other characters as well. At first, the Jim Crow Laws were proposed to restrain blacks and poor whites from
Right off the bat these boys weren’t given a fair trial; they were given an alcoholic as a lawyer. Even though there was medical evidence that pointed towards rape, all nine boys were convicted and put on trial, just like Atticus proved Tom Robinson was innocent and the one who beat Mayella was Mr. Ewell (Altman). In 1955, Emmett Till, a fourteen year old boy, was kidnapped at gunpoint by two white men after Till supposedly said, “Bye baby,” to a white store clerk. His body was then found in the Tallahatchie River with a bullet in his head and there was evidence that he had been heartlessly beaten. Even with all the evidence against the two white men, they were cleared of all the charges by an all-white jury.
