Negative Aspects of Social Media

Social media has plenty of good points. It can be used to express yourself, to reconnect with others, or to even learn someone’s life story just by checking their Facebook page. Social media in general is almost everywhere we go these days, but the biggest one of them all seems to be Facebook. And as with all technology, the benefits are weighed with the weaknesses. According to the Facebook login page, it was founded in February 4, 2004 with a mission statement that reads: Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matter to them. (Facebook 2015). I believe that when this statement was created no one was able to see the disadvantages that this site might create. The Research Pedia states that one potential social disaster that occurs quite often is hacking. Sometimes it’s employed for monkey business and can also lead to more serious concerns, such as, identity theft. Hacking is described as preying on the unsuspected and making some kind of friend connection. The hacker then gathers enough information to create an alternate identity to produce whatever he sees fit. Defamation is another potential hazard on these websites. Young underage girls are having their photos passed around various sites in distasteful locales. These sites can alter your image with photo shopping. People all across the world use these websites to communicate with each other and fall in love. Sometimes individuals get so caught up with the attention they receive from people on the social network that they fail to realize that there is a completely different person at the other end. Another disadvantage to social media is spending way too much of your waking moments on the internet.
