Classroom Management, Engagement, and Motivation NBT 1 Task 1 Adrianne Williams A. The Importance of Classroom Management According to the Glasser Theory, teachers are to instruct students on how to make good choices and take responsibility for their behavior (1998). If things work in this way then learning will be a rewarding experience for students and the teacher. I wholeheartedly agree with that theory, however, I also believe that if the teacher is well organized and well managed the affect on the children will be positive. Therefore, I would go over the classroom/school expectations and I will also tell them what they should expect from me. As the teacher of this class I would also have to discuss the consequences of misbehavior as well as the rewards given to those students who follow the rules. Seeing that we all would be together the whole year it is important that we work as a team to get our daily tasks done and be good doers of our individual work. Since this is a kindergarten class I would have a daily schedule posted at eye level along with the time and a picture explaining the appropriate time to do things, for example a picture of a water fountain along with a picture of a clock meaning we have a water break at 10:00am then the next activity, Math at 10:15am-10:45am ...etc. ending with a picture of a book-bag,a bus/car and a clock displaying 2:45pm and the words Dismissal. My classroom management plan is well thought out, I know I will have to assume that there will be days that will have unexpected events and I would have to be flexible and keep my cool. Managing my kindergarten classroom will take a lot of thought out plans and structure, however with everyone’s help the school year will be exciting and a very productive one for the students as well as for me. Kindergarteners will try to get away with everything. While working as a paraprofessional in an kindergarten class the students always wanted to get water, sharpen a pencil, throw something in the trash. Yes, these things are quit normal during the course of an academic day, however when these behaviors become a distraction to others that is when it becomes an issue. In order for the students to remember there is an appropriate time to do these things I would have a group discussion on the classroom schedule. Keeping in mind not to single out a particular student I would turn this into a game. For example, raise your hand if you know when we sharpen our pencils. The student who answers correctly will get a small reward (sticker, piece of candy,...etc.). This “game” will be a good reminder for the students without drawing unwanted attention to the few who somehow
