Nature vs. Nuture

The nature vs/ nurture controversy stems from the theories of two men. Philosopher John Locke believed that, when we are children our minds are a blank slate and that the environment we are exposed to and the events that happened in our life, are the determining factors of who and/or what we will become later in life. The other side of the controversy is nature, Anthropologist Frank Galton, believed that the genes we inherited are the determining factors in who we are or what we may become in our lives. (Mossler, 2013) When taking a look at my own development, on the nature side of the controversy, I have inherited certain traits from my mother, such as my small bone structure, my green eyes and my brown hair. She has always been very determined and stubborn and I see those traits in myself as well. When looking to nurture, it has played a very large part in the person I have become today. When I was 12 my parents decided take a job as long haul truck drivers. During that time I was left in the care of my older sister who had two young children, because she was stretch so thin, I learned to become independent and it enabled me to learn how to take care of myself. The negative side of that is it also causes me to take on too much, either at work or at home because I feel the need to take care of everything. When determining which had the most impact on the person I have become today, I would have to say it is nurture. I believe this because I do not think I would be who I am today without having to have lived the live I have. If my parents had not taken that job I may be more dependent on them then I am and I may not have the same strength and determination I do now. Reference: Mossler, R. A.
