Whereas other theorists have argued that is is the way we are brought up and influenced by our surroundings that makes an individual the way they are. Nature means the genetic and biological influences that affect our growth and development. The nature side of the debate believes that it is inherited factors which have more impact on your life and development. For example, the colour or type of your hair, your eye colour, the pigmentation of your skin, and also genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis are all the result of the genes we inherit. These biological factors are said to determine an individual’s development and characteristics .
Nature vs. Nurture Over the years, there has been a lot of controversy on whether or not genes that we inherit affect us and how we live, or if it is the environment that we have been raised in. There are many different reasons for why one is more correct than that other. But, all of the reasons can be backed up with very good evidence and reasoning. Personality, development, intelligence, behavior and ability to do certain things make us the individuals that we are. But what influences those things?
The nature-nurture debate is all about whether genetics (nature) or our environment (nurture) is responsible for our behaviour and development. Early theorists believed that our personality, intellect, behaviour and gender role were determined by our genes and therefore could not be changed. But an increasing amount of evidence has proved these theorists wrong, and our development as an individual is learnt through the environment we live in. One developmental stage of an individual that psychologists have the nature-nurture debate about is the intelligence stage. The nature side of that intelligence is present at birth and we already have a set amount of intelligence.
This human process is called social development. This being said, it is a continual change of human behaviors, feelings, and interpersonal thoughts; which will continue to develop over our life-span. Each phase of personal development will be essential in overall growth during childhood through adulthood. Social influences come from solitary comrade or group settings, which can have powerful effects on personal behaviors. The extent in which individuals are influences can depend on self-esteem levels, and individual strengths from moral, values to self-identity.
Nature and Nurture help to make up a person, and help to determine what it means to be human. Nature or nurture, which one has major influence on our personality and development? This issue has been widely debated in our society from ancient time till now. Some people maintain that it is concluded by the characteristic people born with, whereas others are confident that it defers to the experiences people have had in the life. I also believe nurture education plays the significant role in a person’s characteristics.
Actively taking part in shaping ones sense of reality due to their past and past experiences. Other factors that affect our present reality include our educational standard, our socio economic status; happenings within the home environment (both emotional and relational); and everyday interactions with our peers which will subsequently affect our behaviors and the way that we perceive the happenings of life. These factors shape our perception because of their deep capacity to emotionally enhance or detract from our experience. Positive and negative reinforcement governs a lot of our ‘learned behaviors’. We take on board that which we are readily immersed in.
Researchers have tested and advanced his theories and many existing views in cognitive psychology are based on Piaget’s theories. Piaget anticipated that cognitive development and development of mental abilities, happens as we become accustomed to the altering world around us. He described adaption as the nonstop process of using the environment to learn and of learning to alter to changes that come about in the environment. He suggested that adaptation consists of two related process which he called assimilation and accommodation. These two ways are the processes in which we interconnect with the environment.
Nurture in my life is that I was grown up good and had a good childhood. Nurture is about your environment and what goes on around you to make who you are. I think you can have a good personality by nature but still change because of nurture. Like you can be born a certain way and act like that but nurture can have an effect and make you change. Nurture can change anyone, I believe depending where you live or who your friends are
Upon the leaving of Jason, Kay and Arnold have begun to experience issues with intimacy and communication. They have chosen to seek outside help to deal with these issues as well as personal issues of loneliness and inadequacy. Identification of stage of development: Both Kay and Arnold lay within many family stages that transition back and forth within their cycle. This statement is supported by the two basic concepts within Family Life Cycle theory which looks at the life cycle by way of emotional and intellectual stages that one must go through and the developmental tasks that enhance level of responsibility during these stages. To be successful throughout these cycles, family members need to adapt and change to ensure survival of the family.
Personality theories are hypotheses, which look at the individual and try and understand the relationship between nature and nurture which forms the person’s way of being. Most people and psychologists would agree that both nature and nurture have an affect on who we eventually become, what is less universal is where the balance falls. As we grow our innate personality (nature) interacts with our environment (nurture) to produce who we are and during this we produce our own picture of who we are and our perceived place and worth in the world. However great or small the nurturing influence is believed to have, the greatest effects that nurture has on our ‘self’ is during childhood and I shall look at the effects of various
