Discuss the nature and evolution of consciousness Consciousness refers to your individual awareness, unique thought feelings, sensation, memories and environment. A person’s consciousness, experience is constantly changing. For example, in a moment you be focusing on reading an article, at the same time your consciousness may shift to a conversation you had earlier with someone, next may notice how uncomfortable your chair is or you are mentally planning a dinner. This ever shifting stream of thoughts can change dramatically from one moment to the next, but your experience of it seems smooth and effort-less. This experience resulted in psychologist’s need of …the nature and evolution of consciousness. The study of consciousness began in the 19th century from the ides of Sigmund Freud and William James. Sigmund Freud, in his psychoanalytic theory, liens the mind to an iceberg, where a significant portion of the ice is hidden from consciousness. On the other hand, William James described the mind as freely and continuously flowing, likening it to a stream of consciousness. The focus of the research in psychology, shifted to purely observable behaviours, during the 20th century. It was only in the 21st century when psychologists developed renewed interest on the subject of consciousness particularly made detailing the complex nature of sub consciousness. Presently, research has been made detailing the complex nature of consciousness. The different states of consciousness corresponds to differing qualities of awareness and information processing. The conscious state is a state of awareness where the mind knows exactly what it is thinking of. Thinking in the conscious states serial thus sequential, therefore slower, but more productive compared to other states of consciousness.
