Edgar Allen Poe demonstrates in his written works of “Lenore”, “Annabel Lee”, and “To Helen” an element that seemingly attempts to give the reader exceptional emotional sadness. Poe does this by telling the poem in a point of view where a man tells the story of the death or remembrance of a young love or woman. He also puts a sense of gloom in each of his poems. This allows for the reader to create a mental image if the setting, without him having to directly point it out. As well, the gloominess of his poetry could also be due to his longing effect of sadness that he attempts to express.
She denies the seriousness of loss and the sadness it brings by highlighting the commoness of loss and depicting its nature not as a process but as an “art”, evading its disastrous nature. However the poet eventually comes to the realisation of the disastrous effect of losing a person and seems to waver in her opinion. In the first half of the poem Elizabeth Bishop portrays the nature of loss as a common occurrence on a everyday basis and argues that it is not as bad as people claim it to be. The poem’s title “One Art” subtly takes away the pejorative connotation associated with loss and emphasizes that people should accept loss as it is. The poet’s indifference to loss is revealed in the statement “so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster”, highlighting that loss occurs commonly, like any other daily activity, and should not be allowed to let it upset ourselves.
Drawing connections between the author and poem is not always what the author intends on his reader to do. Since there was no direct answer to who the speaker is the speaker of this poem is anonymous. “Annabel Lee” is a heart-filled, compassionate, and somewhat sorrowful poem in which the speaker describes his loyal undying love to the protagonist Annabel Lee. The poem is heart-filled because the speaker uses many different romantic metaphors to describe his love for her. The poem is sorrowful because the speaker describes his grief of the untimely death of his love Annabel Lee.
A poet relies on his feeling to convey the current situations that they are in. Poets usually allow their emotions to drive their words and it allows their thoughts to flow. Poetry is like a playground where poets can explore their inner thought and question everything. Its their view of the world that allows them to paint us a picture of their dreams, aspirations and nightmares that they have encountered. What makes it so effective is that they allow the raw emotion to drive the delivery of their words.
However, instead of literally expressing themes of love, both poets seem to explore the effects of love, and the consequences it can have. Firstly, both poems express the emotion of pain, but in different ways, with Nettles looking at how our pain can also be shared by those we love, whereas Quickdraw looks at how love, sometime maybe unrequited or incomplete, can cause us pain. We can see this theme in Nettles through the semantic field of war, shown with Army vocabulary, including words such as ‘spears’, regiments’ and ‘recruits’, used to describe the ‘bed’ of nettles that cause pain to the persona’s child. This use of vocabulary enables the reader to associate the pain and destruction of war with the situation of the poem, taking the pain felt by the persona to the extreme and amplifying the effect it has on the persona. This enables it to have a much greater impact, and helps the poems transition into the consequences of this pain, such as the anger it causes.
FROST VS. WILLIAMS Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams have different styles of writing poetry. In Robert Frost’s poem “ Gathering Leaves “, Frost explores the repetitiveness and mundanity of human lives. In Contrast, in William Carlos Williams poem “ Between Walls”, he discusses the exceptions that exist in such a mundane and plain world. While both poems are interesting, “Between Walls” is easier to read and more interactive with the reader which makes the poem more fun to read and analyze. Robert Frost uses rhyming scheme and imagery to help the reader feel the poem.
For example the “when rivers rage and rocks grow cold”, “the flowers do fade” help the reader understand that she is rejecting the shepherd and that the imagery from the nymphs reply to the shepherd is a 360 degree turn from the imagery in the passionate shepherd to his love. They also both use exaggeration for example in Christopher Marlowe poem the shepherd says “I will make thee a bed of roses and a thousand fragrant posies”
Blind Horse By Norman MacCaig “Blind Horse”, by Norman MacCaig is a convincing and well written poem that is told as though it is an observation of a horse that has lost its sight. The poem communicates to the reader the horse’s confusion and frustration in a very clever way, using various poetic techniques. The poet successfully manages to create an emotional reaction that makes the reader feel very sympathetic by the clever use of the poet’s language and techniques. At first, to create the atmosphere of sympathy towards the horse, the poet conveys the horse’s boredom and confusion. This is done from the very start of the poem with the use of imagery.
A typical Romantic poem often starts with a description of nature, and then slowly moves on to a human emotional problem which is a result of the observation of nature. Another kind of Romantic nature-poem personifies nature, so that it ends up expressing human life and passions. The Romantic poet saw himself as “a genius” and placed himself outside society and the rest of humanity. The poet was able to look under the surface of everyday things into what they called the essence. The poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud deals with the speaker’s state of mind.
Poe’s starting fairy tale tone worked to show innocence, a true love, an inseparable couple in perfect harmony with each other soon turned sad and dark. He showed a love too perfect as a terrible cycle that ends by death from jealousy which eventually separates the two lovers forever. My analysis of the poem works to show how things always change in life. At the beginning of the poem Edgar Allen Poe gives his readers sort of a “fairy tale” mind set as he uses language which makes people feel happy. Some of that language includes, “Kingdom by the sea.” It is important to understand that Poe’s really wants people to be thinking happy and sweet thoughts.
