There are two types of natural resources, renewable and nonrenewable. Renewable resources can be replaced after they are used. An example of this is when one crop of trees is cut down, another is planted. These resources are not a problem, nonrenewable resources are; those are resources that after they are used, they take millions of years to be replenished, if they ever even are replaced. Metals such as gold and copper, and ores of metals such as iron and aluminum are all considered nonrenewable natural resources. These resources are being used way faster than they can be created. Fossil fuels are natural resources that formed millions of years ago from the remains of ancient organisms, such as dinosaurs. Examples of fossil fuels are coal, oil, and natural gas. There resources are nonrenewable, and can never be created again. These resources are also being depleted over time. Some say that all of these fossil fuels will only last 200 years. Oil is the most important fossil fuel, although they are all very important to the human race. Oil is America’s fuel for almost everything. The United States imports oil from nations around the Persian Gulf. This causes many international problems. Oil is used for fuel, plastics, synthetic fabrics, medicines, insecticides, fertilizers, and detergents. Marcellus Shale is an energy reserve in New York. It is thought to contain trillions of cubic feet of natural gas. The gas is drilled out by drilling companies, or fracked. Fracking is a dangerous way of getting oil and natural gas out of the Earth; it is a short sighted energy strategy and is poisoning our air and water. There is a risk of oil spills with this also. There are many alternative energy sources. One example is solar power. This is energy from the sun. Solar panels can be created and placed on roof tops. This source is plentiful and renewable.
