A website which has affected me is www.reddit.com, A site where people come together to share ideas, experiences and entertainment. Reddit was founded in June 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in Medford MA, both 22-year-old graduates of the University of Virginia.
The website is consisted of links to other web sites that users submit, it could be anything from a picture or video, to a message that they wrote such as asking a question or stating an opinion or idea. Links can be submitted to different sections of the web site called subreddits. For example, there is a subreddit for Cal poly Pomona, where people ask questions and other things related to Cal poly. Links are organized by a voting system, when you vote positively on a link; it is called an “upvote”, when you vote negatively it is called a ”downvote”. The higher the difference between the amount of upvotes and downvotes, the higher it will be on the list and will be featured on the front page. Each linked is also consisted of a thread where people discuss the submitted content.
The way it affected me is that it showed me people’s opinions and experiences in certain things I never knew about, I learned new things and was able to discuss my opinions with the people of the same interest. You can also ask experienced people for help doing something, for example, I was having trouble making my first customized computer and I went on a sub ready called build-a-PC and they helped me out with my problem. One of the most popular Reddits is IAmA "I am a" where users prompt others to AMA "Ask me anything". Recently, many celebrities have taken to this section, including President Barack Obama, Jimmy Kimmel, Ron Paul, Stephen Colbert, Bear Grylls, Deadmau5, Zach Braff, Neil Strauss, Tim Ferriss and others. These all allow users to ask any questions they wish. The two most popular AMAs of all time are Neil Degrasse Tyson and Ken Jennings It is also a great source of entertainment from...
