Narrative and Descriptive essays, the same or different? Ashford University ENG121: English Composition GSC1410F Kendall Shearman April 4, 2014 Are Narrative and Descriptive essays the same or different? In researching this question you will not only be able to answer that question but the evidence will show you how they are different by comparing the two essays. The narrative essay I chose to discuss is "I Want a Wife" by Judy Brady. The descriptive essay I chose is "Homeless" by Ann Quindlan. By evaluating the two essays in a compare and contrast assessment which will support the conclusion statement. Even though, both follow essay format; they are different. Because narrative essays can be written with a logical order attached whereas descriptive essays have no time element included. Narratives use who, what, when, where, why, and how descriptive use the senses, sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. First, narrative and descriptive essays both follow essay format. They both have a thesis, introduction, body and a conclusion. The thesis in a narrative essay may differ slightly from the thesis statement in a descriptive essay. For a narrative essay, you may not be asked to write argument-driven topic sentences, so the thesis statement for a narrative essay may differ from one you would write for other paper types. Rather than stating a specific claim, the thesis statement in a narrative essay may instead give a minimal amount of information to intrigue the reader and it may simply be descriptive in nature (Connell, 2013). The thesis statement in "Homeless", by Anna Quindlan; sets the precedent for the story she is about to tell. She said, "I was wasting my time talking to her she was just passing through; although she'd been passing through for more than two weeks.
