The meeting I attended was called “Change at Woodside”. There were 13 men and 1 woman who were recovering addicts gathered to share their personal feelings and experiences with each other. I found many similarities and differentiations in the NA meeting held in my country and here in United States. Since the NA is a global organization fighting against drugs, each…show more content…
After doing all of the daily required activities Steve called Kevin to the front to share his thoughts and feelings about fear. He started with his introduction “hi my name is Kevin and I’m an addict”. NA believes that drug abuser do not want to face the truth and are afraid of the truth, that is why every recovering addict introduces himself by saying I’m an addict this is the sign to show that he/she now is ready to face the truth and not afraid of it. He told us that how he used to be scared of the people around him and could not get involved in the public environment, so he started taking drugs which made it easier for him to get connected with the people around him. He said it was fun doing drugs at the beginning but as time passed it became a habit and then a need. He even told us that he could not be a good husband and a father because of how he used to break almost all promises that he made to his wife and kids. He was a mamma’s boy so every now and then when he had nothing to eat, no money to do drugs he would go to his mom’s house and knock on her window and ask for money. He said when he did that, the face of his mom at the moment seemed very sad and he now proudly said how happy he is to be clean and not seeing his mother’s sad face. When Kevin finished his sharing, everyone in the meeting would persuade him by saying “keep coming back”. And then one…show more content…
And now I feel proud to say that I’m clean for 6 years 3 months and 14 days. NA does not take cigarettes as a threat because it does not make a drug abuser to have craving for drugs but alcohol which most of the drug abuser think it is not a drug; however NA says it is and by stop using drugs and start using alcohol as a substitute never works but only worsens the situation. This is because at the end you will wind up taking drugs. Another difference I found about NA meeting of United States and Nepal is that here meetings can either be closed or open to the public. If it is a closed meeting then you cannot attend it unless you feel like you are abused by drugs, however in Nepal there is no such open or closed meeting. Another difference I saw was that here they have a business meeting right after the regular meeting has ended in this short meeting of 10 minutes they discussed the motion of other NA meeting groups for to use their capital which they collected in the meeting with everyone, which was not mandatory if you have you share if you do not that’s fine. After discussing the motion they voted either to agree or disagree with that motion. Last thing they do in the meeting is share a 1 minute silence period and say just for today keep coming back and end the
