History of the NFL Attention Catcher- Vince Lombardi once said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand”. Thesis- In this speech, I am going to inform you about the history of the National Football League. Preview-To begin, I will let you know how football started in America. Then I will inform you about how football started the first professional league. Finally, I am going to let you know how the national football league has changed over the years. I. Main point-How football started in America. a. Even at first when people started playing any kind of ball game, an association with American football could be made dating way back to ancient Egyptian times. However, the general consensus is that the first traces of what later would develop into a multimillion dollar industry; football or rugby, began in Europe. It is easily conceivable that England would act as the breeding-ground for the sport, but early signs of rugby can be found in all the major medieval powers of Europe as said by “American football and its heritage”…show more content…
Before there was any professional league, they had clubs which were pro football teams. Often these clubs would pay college players to join their team to play. d. In 1920, eleven clubs joined together to start the AFA (American Football Association). This association elected a president and sold franchises for just $100. In 1922, the AFA expanded to 18 teams and changed its name to what is now known as the National Football League. This set the stage for what would become the all day Sunday and Monday night pastime of an entire nation as said by “A History of Football”.
