Majority of teams in the world still show the British origins in their names, such as AC Milan in Italy, Grêmio in Brazil, and Athletic Bilbao in Spain. Cricket became popular in several of the nations of the then British Empire, for example; Australia, South Africa and India. Baseball was known in the North-eastern United States, with the first rules being codified in the 1840s, while American football was very popular in the south-east, when baseball was spreading to the south, and American football was spreading to the north after the Civil War. In the 1870s the game split between the professionals and amateurs; the professional game then gained dominance.
The most significant difference from rugby and American football was the system of ‘downs’ in which a team is only given a number of plays to cover a certain area of the field in order to keep possession of the ball. From all these changes the game was evolving into the sport of American football. November 12, 1892 an important date in sport history. It was the day the Allegheny Athletic Association football team defeated the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, the game was not as important as was the fact that one of the AAA players, William Heffelfinger was openly paid $500 to play the game, making him the first known professional football player. Should College Football Be Banned? The first recorded football game was played in New Brunswick, New Jersey on November 6th, 1869 between Rutgers College and Princeton University. Ever since then football has been a tremendous part of American tradition. From the big time National Football League (NFL) all the way down to small school leagues and even Pee-Wee football.
