It’s incredibly evident to the reader that Lord Chesterfield’s son takes advantage of him and this letter is probably Lord Chesterfield’s last effort to guide his son. Lord Chesterfield’s wisdom and core values that he has acquired throughout his life are portrayed into this detailed letter to his son using a variety of rhetorical strategies. In Lord Chesterfield’s introduction to his letter, the atmosphere of the message itself is modest and gentle. He uses his words in such a way that it comes off as if the advice he is going to give is something that his son has grown tired of hearing but Lord Chesterfield is going to share this same piece of advice one last time with his son in a gracious way. One example of Lord Chesterfield’s humble attempt to fill his son with his judgment is through personification: “I know how unwelcome advice generally is;” (lines 5-6).
The first time a child leaves home is an important milestone in every family. This principle applies to even families belonging to the nobility in the mid-eighteenth century. In Lord Chesterfield’s letter to his son, he voices many opinions about him that many parents would like to say to their children even today. Lord Chesterfield skillfully uses subliminal messages in diction, humble concessions, contradictory language, indirect threats, and demoralizing lectures to impose his values on his insubordinate son. It is clear to the reader that his son takes his father for granted and the letter is a last-ditch effort by Lord Chesterfield to help him.
This can be observed when Artie is driving with his wife and says: “Somehow, I wish I had been in Auschwite with my parents so I could really know what they lived through! I guess it’s some form of guilt about having had an easier life then they did.”(II, 16) Artie realizes himself that he feels guilty about the way his life seems easier than his parents as he was not part of the war. Furthermore, it is noted that Artie feels guilty when he states that he used to take a shower and was trying to image as if it was a gas shower (II, 16). This shows how guilt affected him and he was trying to find a way to feel like the Jews felt during the war. These examples show how guilt affects Artie for not have been living during the time of the
“Reunion” by John Cheever is a short story about Charlie who hasn’t seen his father since his parents’ divorce. So on his way back to his mother’s house he schedules a lunch with his father. Yet Charlie’s view on his father changes when his father continually has problems controlling his bad attitude. In “Powder and “Reunion” the authors use father/son relationships, point of view and conflict to portray to the reader that almost all father and son relationships have their flaws. In the two short stories it seems as if the sons’ relationships with their father were quite different, but they also had their similarities because both of them cared for their son.
This is very similar to his past school records at other schools, always finding a way to get kicked out. Reading all of this shows how Holden really didn't have much of a smooth start. Chapter Two "Life Is A Game" I would call this chapter "Life Is A Game". I say this because in this chapter Holden has a very notable conversation with one of his teachers Mr. Spencer. In this conversation Holden is at Mr. Spencer's house, and even though Mr. Spencer likes Holden he still failed him.
In addition, the book is extremely essential to Rodriguez, because the book made him realize the problems and mistakes that he had experienced as a scholarship boy. That is what led him to determine to change himself. “I came home. After the year in England, I spent three summer months living with my mother and father, relieved by how easy it was to be home” (531) Hoggart’s words made Rodriguez know himself better by writing about the scholarship boy. Rodriguez realized in his way of pursuing knowledge, he had missed something very important, what he had to do is trying to make up his mistake by going back home and accompany his family.
Grant tells Jefferson that he is more of a man that he could ever be, and that we all need him. In Jefferson diary he admits his thoughts. He talks about how it is difficult for him to sleep at night, because all he dreams about is going through the door of his execution. He confesses why he acted the way he did in the beginning to Grant, and Miss Emma, he says it was because no one ever told him that they loved him so he wasn’t sure how to do the same. He confesses that he cries a night because he is scared, and because Grant has been so good to him.
“Words give us symbolic vehicles to communicate our creations and discoveries to others”. When Sonny told his father that he adopted a kid, the specific words he used had a strong influence on the dad’s reaction. Beebe, Beebe, and Ivy also noted that “when you label something good or bad you use language to create your own vision of how you experience the world”. In this particular scene, Sonny was stuttering a lot and his words symbolized his confusion of the current situation. Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy (2012) noted that “words and actions are tools we use to let someone know whether we support them or not”(p.76) Jack Gibbs has researched supportive and defensive communication for a couple years now and he defines defensive communication as “a language that creates a climate of hostility and mistrust”(p. 76-77) In the scene the father uses crude language and even goes to the extent of saying that “the kid would be better off living in a dumpster than with Sonny” (Adam Sandler).
Nick Ladd Professor Fair English 243 24 February 2014 In “Of the Coming of John”, by W.E.B. Dubois the main character was John Jones, and he struggled to find his own identity. Sent away to school with the promise of “When John comes home” (Page 166), he found that he had been kicked out. He still felt the pressure to do well from his obligations to his hometown, and after working pushes himself to get through school. With this education comes a “lifted veil’, for he can now see the world around him as all other educated persons can.
Plays are not usually one of my interests, but when I went to the Woods Theatre to see Beth Henley’s, “Crime’s of the Heart” I felt more comfortable than I thought. The building was very inviting due to the fact that the theatre resembles a house. The fact that the theatre looked really similar to a house I’d see in my neighborhood made me feel at ease, calm and at home. The lighting on the inside made me feel relaxed and eager to watch the play because it was dimmed while the lights on the stage were bright, attracting my attention. I enjoyed the fact that my fellow classmates were involved in putting on the show.
